Isn't there expected to be a significant difference in the build quality/construction between the D3x versus the A900? Not to mention the form factor? Wouldn't that alone account for commensurately different price tag?

Secondly, Sony will want to compete with the Canon 5D - for current users of the 5D and prospective buyers of the 5D-MkII, so the pricing will likely have that level in mind, moreso than the D3x.

Thirdly, Sony needs a greater enticement to their overall system than does Nikon or Canon, so i would imagine the A900 price would be lower even than its value. Maybe Sony has in mind the same strategy employed with gaming systems. That it may need to take a loss in selling bodies in order to capture market share and to sell more lenses and bodies over time.

Of course, i just like pictures and have no business sense, so perhaps i'm all wrong....

Oh, as a note, the K20D/GX20 controversy is entirely different. Those are essentially the same camera, the differences are csmetic and software only. It's unlikely the A900 and D3X will be as close in spec as the D300 and A700 are.

Actually, it doesn't make the rumoured A900 price seem low at all. The A900 will almost assuredly be a lower-spec body than the D3X, much as the A700 is lower-spec and lower price than the D300 with which it shares a related sensor. I'd expect the A900 to have some build improvements over the A700, possibly a build as good as the D300, but the D3 series body is a fairly major step up from the D300 level body. The D3X is going to offer features like GPS integration, dual card slots, heavy weather sealing, 2000+ shots per charge, optional Wifi transmitters, all of which the A900 is likely to lack. The A900 will most likely be comparable most directly to Canon's 5D replacement and Nikon's rumoured D10/D300FX bodies, not full-on pro bodies like the 1DsmIII and D3X, despite likely sharing a basic sensor design with the D3X (Nikon will assuredly use a different readout system in the D3X than Sony does in the A900, the per-line readouts that Sony is touting for noise control don't yet perform as well as Nikon's configuration with traditional multi-channel readouts).
