The area that doesn't make much sense is the 1" sensors they are priced way above APS-C (bar the cheap Nikon 1 bodies or older Sony models). At the right price it's a decent sensor. I'm not convinced with the "pretend" medium format either and by that I mean the Pentax 645 and recently the […]

I quite agree which is why I said ages ago that you have to have a range of models for different buyers (and do a bit of work on the system overall). There is a huge gap from the A77II to A99II more than most will stomach unless you already have the A99 and deep […]

Is the new 99ii really aimed at the professional market, if so, they will struggle against Canikon, who are well established globally in that market, I cannot see Pros trading in whole systems worth thousands to go over to Sony. I guess its aimed possibly at existing A mount users, new pros to the business […]

Canon can afford to price the 5dmkIV at that price so it does not shock me at all. It is outrageous but then pricing hasn't exactly been going down on cameras. They have enough users willing to pony up the cash. Mind you I tried the MkIII and didn't see what all the fussy was […]

Alpha 55 1080p HD video – snow in Scotland

This video was made on December 23rd using the Alpha 55 (AVCHD recording) hand held, with SS enabled, and the Carl Zeiss 16-80mm zoom. This video has been uploaded in full 1080p HD and can be viewed at high resolution if you have a fast enough connection. The soundtrack is a classical guitar piece I wrote ten years ago, on the last day of the year 2000, when snow was falling by moonlight which I guess the music represents a bit better than mid-day.

Some camera-mic sound has been left in place for two of the takes, and the shot of the stone wall uses active phase detection AF during video. This was not possible for most takes, as the snowflakes falling made the focus constantly change as they passed the focus zones!

Hope you enjoy it! The camera got very wet with snow – you can see where flakes landed on the lens filter – and ended up being wiped down many times. Eventually, after going into a shop for a few minutes, everything steamed up. But it seems fine after letting it dry out and warm up. It was not very cold, around 1°C for snow to be falling like this.

Manual focus, as commented in the text. The snowflakes kept changing the autofocus as they passed the AF sensor positions. You can have all the snow you like!

Beautiful video and music. Has me inspired to do some winter photography – we just need a little snowfall here in NY (Long Island). Were you using manual focus for most takes?
