A divided path for Sony

300mmSSM-II

Most Japanese camera companies have divisions, groups, and teams right down to the very last individual product. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 review

rx100frontthreequarter-web

The first thing that is likely to strike you about Sony’s one-inch sensor Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 is size. It’s tiny, slightly smaller in body than the Nikon 1 series interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras using an identical size 2.7X factor, one-inch or 13.2 x 8.8mm sensor. This just a fraction over half the area of a standard APS-C [...] . . . → Read More: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 review

Amazon – possible SanDisk UHS-1 card bargain

sandisk45mbs

Yesterday we received two SanDisk 30MB/s 16GB SDHC cards from Amazon UK – £15.99 each, a couple of pounds more than regular Class 10 cards like the Transcends we normally use on all current Alpha and NEX models. You must have faster than 15MB/s for cameras such as the A55, A580 or NEX-5n not because [...] . . . → Read More: Amazon – possible SanDisk UHS-1 card bargain

Tamron’s has announced a high-power zoom for Sony’s NEX-series – the 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC (Model B011). It weighs 460g, uses 62mm filters, and has VC (Vibration Compensation). The metallic lens barrel exterior is [...] . . . → Read More: Tamron 18-200mm VC for NEX

Canon kyboshes the competition – full cinema system

Canon has launched, out of the blue as far as we were concerned, a complete fully featured Cinema HD production system including full-frame digital video camcorder and EF-fit lenses designed to compete head-on with the top offerings from Zeiss/Arri and Red. The Cinema EOS system also competes with Sony right in the heart of Sony prime [...] . . . → Read More: Canon kyboshes the competition – full cinema system

Sony ‘HowTo’ videos – a different level

Paul Genge of Sony UK noted my criticism of the Sony corporate videos. Well, what Sony were not publicizing so well was that Paul has been making some rather homespun but far more valuable and interesting videos – in fact, going beyond the usual remit of Sony staff to do stuff almost off the cuff. I [...] . . . → Read More: Sony ‘HowTo’ videos – a different level

Sony – please add gain control to A77 sound

SONY DSC

When I had the Canon 60D and 600D cameras for the usual brief period of magazine review loan, one of the things I could have tested more thoroughly was the excellent implementation of sound input gain control. Since it worked, and worked really well, I had no need to. Any system with auto gain, in [...] . . . → Read More: Sony – please add gain control to A77 sound
