Re: Metal mount on A58

In the unlikely event of anyone actually wearing out the standard lens mount on their A58 I would suggest using the mount from an old Minolta Dynax 3000i or similar, ~ £5 from a charity shop near you.

Re: Remote Control App for a58

With regard to RCCDroid I have had no problems with my Huawei Ascend Y300 and Star S4 smartphones. These are cheap phones, the former cost £70 from Argos and the latter £120 on eBay (new).

Re: A58 has best image quality

" I think Barry Fitzgerald is right when he points out that the removal of the remote function was a mistake." So do I. Thankfully, the problem has been (partially) resolved with the Android app RCCDROID. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now with no issues and apparently the develo...

Re: What to do next?

"If you think OVF’s are dead check out the Df sales, Nikon can’t keep up with the demand, if you order one now you will wait 6 months before you get it, (according to a Nikon chief) and not only does it have an OVF it’s a FF camera that can’t do video. Nikon’s secret? They have and maintain a ...

Re: What to do next?

The simple fact is that the 'traditional' DSLR market is overwhelmingly dominated by Canon and Nikon. To try and take these two on in a head to head would be commercial suicide. Because of their dominance Canon and Nikon have become complacent and are avoiding any real innovation (echos of the Briti...

Remote Control App for a58

I've noticed over the last few days on various Sony forums someone plugging an app he'd written to remotely control the a58. I installed it on my smartphone today and gave it a quick trial. After a limited trial I'm happy to report that it appears to work OK. I intend to give it further tests over t...

Re: A58 has best image quality

So the die has been cast. I have just ordered a new body only A58 on ebay for £290 delivered - UK stock. I looked at the most recent SAR rumour http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-a6000-is-the-only-system-camera-to-be-announced-at-cp-a79-coming-soon/ A6000 with 24Mp sensor and maybe no stabilisation...

Re: A58 has best image quality

I agree, both JPEG and ARW files at or under ISO800 are quite remarkable with both the a37 and a58. However, after looking at the ARW files produced at ISO3200 and 6400 today I can see great potential for 'moody' B&W images. :)

Re: A58 has best image quality

Alphaomega I've just completed a video test with my a58 and a Minolta 100-200 lens set at 200mm on a tripod. Steadyshot-ON reduced my induced vibrations by about 50% compared to Steadyshot-OFF although this wasn't enough for a pleasing result. However, using the Media Stabilizer option in Movie Stud...

Re: A58 has best image quality

Just to add... These are re-sized copies of the original untouched, unedited JPEG's. There isn't much between them up to and including ISO6400 and the RAW files are likewise pretty much a match up to iSO6400 although they both look sharper than the JPEG's with a rather pleasing grain structure. I ca...

Re: A58 has best image quality

High ISO performance isn't an issue for me so I haven't done any testing... until today.
I've just finished a comparison test between the a37 and the a58 using the same subject, same viewpoint, same lens and same camera settings. These are taken at ISO 12800...

Re: A58 has best image quality

Hi The a58 takes quality stills and video and is a sound purchase at current prices (even the kit lens is good when stopped down to ~ f8). Steadyshot isn't recommended on Sony cameras when they are tripod mounted but in the scenario you describe (250mm focal length on a light tripod) there will alwa...

Re: Sony A58 "plastic lens mount"

You're using selective comparisons. The A57 was £699 with 18-55mm kit lens at launch! No, it's not an "upgrade" to the A57, it's a "replacement" for both the A37 and the A57 and it is launched at a price 72% of the A57 launch price. Surely you don't expect an upgraded camera for ...

Re: Sony A58 "plastic lens mount"

Sorry but I think you're being a bit selective here. 8fps in crop mode..right but it's still a downgrade v the previous model The reason people are kicking up on this new A58 is it's a downgrade in most areas let's thrash this list out to avoid any confusion here. Better: + Longer battery life + Be...
