Re: Why it's time to move away from Lightroom

I rarely contribute to discussions, being a keen and serious amateur who feels that he has little to contribute and a lot to learn. HoweverI find this discussion extremely shallow. I used to use Lightroom, but DxO is where all me shots go before I even look at them; its automatic treatment gets the ...

Re: RX100 replacement options

I went round in circles trying to determine which camera to get to replace my RX100, which, like others, I loved but hated the lack of an eye-level viewfinder. Finally, I bought a RX100/3 on eBay, hardly used, for a very acceptable price. I am now VERY happy for my 'everywhere, everyday" camera...

Re: My Sony A7R has no WiFi

I found the answer by browsing around. It seems that this is a long-time problem, caused by Sony's deficient software and their poor description of how to use it. The "auto" function of the USB connect on the camera doesn't work properly; one must set this to MTP. Then connection works fin...

My Sony A7R has no WiFi

I recently tried to download some photos to my iPad using the WiFi facility of myA7R and the Sony Play Memories mobile. The iPad fails to see the camera.
Has anybody any suggestions?

Re: Samyang 12mm f/2

Back at my desk after a week away, and I should have noted that this 18mm 'achievement' comes by the use of the digital zoom facility, something which in most contexts is not advised. Much better to do the zooming on the computer. Unlike the longer focal length obtained using FF lenses on an APC-S c...

Re: Samyang 12mm f/2

I see my point of confusion: When a FF lens is used on an APC-S camera, only the centre of its FOV is used, so it acts as a wider angled lens. The A7 allows the camera to capture all the lens's FOV, by deactivating the APC-S framing, which is switched on by default. With a lens like the Sony 10-18, ...

Re: Samyang 12mm f/2

I'll put it another way- If I set the 10-18 zoom to 12mm, the focal length of the Samyang (which is an APC-S lens - correction!), on the A6000 the FOV is smaller than on the A7R. My "18mm" comment is the setting which makes the FOV with this zoom on the A7 to same as 12 mm on the A6000 - t...

Re: Samyang 12mm f/2

Thanks, Dusty, for your response but I think you have it wrong. To make sure, I did as you suggested and looked at how my lenses work on the two sensor sizes. When I put my Sony 10-18 zoom on my A6000 , then put it on my A7, the field of view on the A7 is wider than on the A6000. To get the same FOV...

Re: need a new laptop or tablet or something

I have always taken my MacBook with me and if I expect the need for extensive back-ups, also a small Hard Drive (the old one out of the MacBook when I upgraded it, in a new case). But with some tablets, one should be able to use such a Hard Drive for back-up with the correct cabling. It all depends ...

Samyang 12mm f/2

David, In your review of the Samyang 12mm f/2, you say that "It is equivalent to an 18mm on full frame". Surely this is incorrect? It will be equivalent to 8mm on Full Frame if my understanding of these lens descriptions is correct. However, I have to admit that I find these conversions co...

Re: Sony FE 70-200mm OSS - help needed - info

David - Talking about the Minolta 100 - 300 APO, you say "Main problems - soft wide open at 300mm (but this was in the days before AF calibration, or live view focus, and focus errors were just as likely to be the cause as anything else); slow AF". Recently, I have used this lens with the ...

Re: SAR - "Under development" full frame FE 24-240

Although not "FE", you could try the Sony APS-C SEL18200. On full frame cameras it will give 150mm, and, with the APS-C framing disabled, will provide a good square image capture. The quality of the images is very good so can be 'enlarged' easily.

Re: Using The LA-EA4 for alpha mounts

You sound a difficult customer, but I agree that getting the right 'feel' is important - you are fortunate in having so many frienfds who let you play with their equipment before committing. I probably wouldn't have bought the A7R with such help but now have grown to love it, in spite of its focusin...

Re: Using The LA-EA4 for alpha mounts

I have recently used a Minolta 100-300 APO lens with the LA-EA4 adapter with great success on both my A7R and my A6000. The detail resolution is quite exceptional. As we were on a 'safari' and often photographing animals at distance, their use on the A6000 gave a 450mm lens without any obvious loss ...
