Re: New Lens Coatings

I have seen some talk that, at least with some lenses, Sony's newer coatings have improved the performance of some of classic "previously-Minolta" lenses, in some cases by reducing that particular type of flare introduced by the interaction between the lens and digital sensor. As I can't j...

Re: KM Maxxum/Dynax/Alpha 7D jpegs

I found the comments above interesting. I used Canon DLSRs for years because they were reported to have the best JPEGs. Had the KM 7D and 5D been reported as having great JPEG engines, I'd almost certainly have bought one. These days I'm often using a Sony A37, which I feel delivers very good JPEGs ...

Re: SteadyShot not working

I realise this was over two years ago, but anyway, this seems to be a widespread problem, based on the number of cameras offered for sale online with it. It isn't clear to me whether it only occours after a physical shock or whether it can appear unprompted. I have read that it may be possible to si...

Re: Are Sigma lens as warm as Minolta and Sony lens

To answer the original question, Sigma lenses traditionally tended to have a very slightly yellower than neutral cast which some characterised as warmth. I have a suspicion that they may have lost this signature, if it was ever strong enough to be a signature. I don't currently use any modern Sigma ...

Re: 24-85mm Minolta

Yes. We can't totally rely on Kurt. Although, for whatever reason, it seems the 28-85 no longer seems to have quite the general reputation it used to, compared with, say, the 35-70/4 or first 35-105. It also seems that some of the slightly later lenses like the 28-105 and maybe 24-85 are considered ...

Re: 24-85mm Minolta

I suspect that there was quite a bit of sample variation when these lenses were new, and that for used examples, there is loads, once 20-30 years of use is factored in. I recently bought my second 28-85 (my first had been sold at least 20 years ago!), expecting to be disappointed with it under what ...

Re: Minolta 500mm reflex vs. Tamron 70-300mm - real world

I was interested to see your comparison, but don't feel that the deer you shot with the Minolta and posted at 1:1 is in focus. Looking at the whole frame, the plane of sharp focus is definitely behind the nearer animal that you also showed as a 1:1 crop, and possibly even slightly behind the other d...
