Re: unsharp mask

Mike, I can't answer your question specifically but would like to broaden your question a little and ask members: when you apply USM what process do you go through with each image to determine the right amount of sharpening? What do you look for to make your decisions? There are many, many examples ...

Re: Upsizing questions

A 17.5 megapixel output from Adobe Camera Raw can look very good from the D7D. Interpolating up JPEGs is a different matter, you just blow up detail so it gets softer. David OK, thanks David - I'd assumed that using JPEGs would be no good. But I'm still puzzled that if I can effectively upsize my 7...

Upsizing questions

Hi all, My slow but steady transition to a digital workflow continues. I was reading the Exceptional Work All Round thread that hinted at Alamy’s posting requirements about upsizing to a minimum file size. I’m curious about this process, not how it is done, but why. I’d always assumed that upsizing ...

Re: Tamron 17-50 - Comments sought after a comparative test

Thanks for all those who have commented. Since asking my original question, I have learned that whatever misgivings I have about my particular Tamron, it is probably no worse than others, or at least not fatally so. Which is probably just as well as an exchange is not on the cards. So, have I learne...

Re: Tamron 17-50 - Comments sought after a comparative test

Sadly Kevin, I think you are right. I've just re-read a number of reviews of the Tamron and simply cannot reconcile my results with the various review sites that praise this lens. I'll take it back to where I bought it with a view to an exchange, but suspect I will be out of luck. I also hope to &qu...

Re: Tamron 17-50 - Comments sought after a comparative test

OK – thanks for these observations. It sounds like the Tamron’s performance is about what I should expect to get from it. I’m still some way away from deciding though whether that performance is actually good enough. I am not an especially demanding photographer but the ability to produce a 10 by 8 ...

Tamron 17-50 - Comments sought after a comparative test

Some time ago I was ruminating about wanting to rationalise my lenses now that I had bought a second hand 7D. Based on the high praise on many review sites, I bought the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 as a general walk-round lens, and hoped it would allow me to replace my Minolta 28 f2.8 and Minolta 50 f1.7 lens...

Re: tamron 17-50 f2.8 zoom.

I agree with the natural tendency to want to keep the primes. But quite a few reviews suggest the comparison is actually very close between the Tamron and the 50/1.7, and probably better than the 28/2.8, although there is some variation between copies of each lens. I’ll try to do a few of my own tes...

Re: tamron 17-50 f2.8 zoom.

I’m glad I read this thread! I mentioned in another thread I was looking to rationalise my lenses and since then had chosen the Tamron as my most likely choice. I’d have preferred the CZ16-80 but could not justify the fact it cost more than double the price of the Tamron. I also thought about the Si...

Re: Which zoom lens for a new APS-C user?

Hi Kevin, That was pretty much what I thought would be the case. Both the Tamron and the Sigma seem to have their strengths and weaknesses. For me though it seems the consensus that the Tamron's has better image quality as well as its constant aperture outweigh the longer reach and lower price of th...

Re: Which zoom lens for a new APS-C user?

As someone in a similar situation myself, this looks like a pretty useful thread. I asked some similar advice in the "Rationalising my lenses" thread as I already have a motley collection of lenses from film days I want to sort out. For me I'm tending to the Tamron 17-50 as a mate for my B...

Re: Seeking ideas on software for workflow and PP

Hi Peter Having used Picture Publisher for the best part of a decade, the Gimp looks rather like a step or two backwards. I will indeed keep searching. Lightroom is looking like an interesting proposition for me and I'll download the free trial in the not too distant future. It's hugely frustrating ...

Re: Rationalising my lenses

Hi Greg and others, Thanks for your thoughts. i'm still mulling over this but the Tamron 17-50 is emerging as the front runner. As you say Greg, and as I thought in my initial post, that will still leave me with the subsequent purchase of a very wide angle at a later date to contend with. However, b...

Re: Seeking ideas on software for workflow and PP

Hi Peter, Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I must say though I found it a little daunting - so many programs! I will investigate C1 a little more based on your experience. I'm puzzled about your comment that PS Elements "attempts to take over all sorts of things" - what did you have...

Seeking ideas on software for workflow and PP

G’day all, As part of my move to a fully digital world, I’m looking for ideas on the right software for me. Although I have only recently bought a DSLR I have been happily scanning slides for many years and then editing in Picture Publisher 8. My workflow, such as it was, looked like this: • Collect...
