Re: NEX FF camera rumours on SAR
Folks actually have it the wrong way around, it's a disadvantage to have a sensor so close to the focal plane. As Leica found out it's actually quite hard to make good performing lenses that don't run and hide in the edges and corners. Of course, one can always position the rear lens element as clo...

Re: Sony NEX-7 Six Months On
I am really not sure what he is talking about re: shadow detail. With contrast set to -3 in "portrait" creative style, and "Liveview Display Show Settings Effects -- ON" my Alpha 65 EVF shows a boatload of shadow detail. I really wonder what his NEX settings are. See the section...

Tamron 200-500. Light, sharp and you'll need every bit of that reach on your FF sensor!

Minolta 100-400
I'm seriously considering getting this lens for my daughter who loves to take pictures of birds and other creatures. Also under consideration is the Minolta 500 Reflex. Both of them are reasonably light and their owners enjoy them. Also the price is right. . . She is not going to use a tripod at thi...

Re: Minolta 50/1.4 AF problems on Alpha 350
The 550 seems to focus better with this lens (although certainly far from perfectly). I'm tempted to pick up a 50/1.7 and see if I have better luck with it. I'd rather not get the new 50/1.8 despite David's praise for this lens because I plan to go FF as soon as Sony offers a FF version of the Alpha...

Re: Minolta 50/1.4 AF problems on Alpha 350
I'm inclined to agree with you David -- the 50/1.4 is a low contrast lens for sure, and it will lock if the target is good enough.
It will be interesting to see how the 550 does. . .

Minolta 50/1.4 AF problems on Alpha 350
have a devil of a time with AF on this lens. My other lenses AF much more reliably. It will hunt even outdoors in good light with cats and other such. This is not an issue of FF or BF -- it is an issue of not locking focus (I have tweaked my AF sensor distance which is now pretty accurate on all my ...

Re: Adobe releases Lightroom 3 Beta update
I've been playing around with it too and the high-ISO conversions from my Alpha 350 don't look any better than the Beta1 ones, which are just as grainy as previous Adobe product conversions.
Raw Therapee just rocks its world, IMO, for high-ISO work. . .

Why are the RawTherapee high-ISO conversions almost infinitely better than any version of any Adobe product?!

Re: More from Gustav on Sony Alpha in 2010
Barry, That market share data was complete garbage, as it only looked at the 20 top selling models. Given that the top selling Sony models were only available for about 1/2 of the year, obviously that impacted sales %. If you want to look at market share, you have to look at total market share acros...

Re: Trade 350 for 550?
It's frustrating reading threads where a700 users bang on about how much they love their cameras because I have never loved the a350. I use it because I have no alternative and Sony don't seem to want to offer me one. If you over analyze that much, you will never be happy with any camera. Look at $...

Re: Trade 350 for 550?
I'm finding the A550 very useful for medium to high ISO shots. Some ISO 200 shots are exceptional, but not all. However - the thing with the A350 is not just that is has as slightly better ISO 100 than the A550 200, it's to do with colour and tone. I have just been given another 300+ A350 raw files...
