Anyone bought a new scanner recently?

Has anyone bought a new scanner recently that they're happy with? Or even tried one out? I only have an old Epson 4490, and scans are very slow and not that great. Recently, I was contacted by someone who wants to do a documentary on a social movement that happened 30 years ago, and I have thousands...

Re: Ryzen Mini PC vs. Laptop

For the most part, Henry, I think you'll be okay on re-d/ling the software. Adobe is rental, so they don't care about platform, darktable is FLOSS and Vuescan premium shareware. Other stuff you have may be a problem, as MS and some of the other companies lock you in to a motherboard. That's one of t...

Re: Future of A mount

Well, that's a nice price for a Zeiss! Too bad I already have the 16-80. The second hand market prices are reflecting the fact that people are abandoning the SLR for the phone, and no wonder. Besides the prices, phones have gotten much much better at taking pics, Samsung now having a 200mp sensor in...

Re: Ryzen Mini PC vs. Laptop

Henry, one thing gamers like is fast refresh rates, so they may do the trick. I haven't looked at the specs, but some of the minis out there do have a slot or 2 that's free, so the possibility of an updated graphics card would be one of my criteria in a mini.

Yildiz, if I ever get rich, I'm going to bribe you to make all of those savory dishes for me, at least once! What would it take? A complete set of lenses? Your own restaurant?

Sig, You may be done with this project already (I'm late to the game), but if not, take some close-ups of the unique brickwork at the Lemp facility. One year when we there for the "haunted warehouse", my brother - a mason's tender - pointed out the "Soldiers and Sailors" brickwor...

JT, come on down. I'll kill the fatted guinea pig for lunch and then we can take photos. :D But if you don't like guinea pig, I'm sure we can find something else you would enjoy. Sury, I really like the colors (or should I say blues) in the first shot. The third shot got my attention as I al...

Re: Volcanoes, Flowers, and Waterfalls (from a recent trip)

Thanks Valery, Sury, and Yildiz for the comments. We put on the miles and had only one minor mishap. Thankfully the tire went flat while we were in a town were we could get it fixed. At any rate, it allowed me to brush up on my tire changing skills. Here are the cheap cell phone shots of my r...

Re: Sigma 17-35 and Sony A99M2

The 700 is doing just fine. I did have a bit of GAS recently, as noted in the Equipment section, so I hope to put some different lenses on it and try it out with them. The one drawback with the 700 is finding CF cards. I was wondering if anyone has any experience using the CF to SD converters in a c...

Re: Pigeon Point Light House, Pescadero, California

Beautiful sunset! I really like the second shot. I also like the ambience of the wood fence/railing in the first shot but unfortunately it hides the shoreline. I’m guessing that an angle with the fence, the shoreline, and the sunset wasn’t functionally possible. Oh well, we take what we can get, ri...

Sury, I'm trying to catch up on about 2 years of ignoring this part of the board, so excuse me for re-opening something over a year old. You sell yourself short. I know, as we are very much "twins" in this regard. As an engineer, you are no doubt very creative, albeit that may be stacking ...

Re: Does low light matter to you?

Someone posted this link. It shows side by side 100% crops of an Olympus E-M10II ISO 25,600 40 LUX (low light) photo with Lightroom noise reduction, DXO Deep Prime, and with no noise reduction: https://postimg.cc/z3PsZ3SQ It is my understanding that DXO Deep Prime allows you to choose how much NR i...

Re: A Little bit of G.A.S.

Barry, I wish I would have known you had one you were willing to part with. DK's opinion of the Tokina makes me want to have one, and I wanted one right before they stopped making it in Alpha mount. Right after that, the used price went up to more than new, for Alpha. Since it's a bit faster, it wou...

Re: A Little bit of G.A.S.

It seems like the G.A.S. hasn't totally left my system yet. This morning there was a Sigma 8-16 - a lens I've lusted after for quite some time - just sitting on e-bay with no one bidding on it. I had to go meet the wedding party to get a review of the venue, and it was going to end before I got back...

But, but but.....

It's the first DSLR with a top ISO speed of over 1 million! That's just what you need to take a photo of a whole stadium at night lit only by a single candle!

Aren't you going to need that?
