Re: Tripod??
I have a 20 plus year old Velbon VE-3 tripod. It's built to withstand a near miss of a nuclear weapon. They don't build them like that anymore. You can have your carbon composite, I'll stick with my aluminum. I replaced the original head with a Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action Ballhead. It makes a great...

Re: What lenses do you use?
I'm an amateur photographer. If I had to do it for a living it wouldn't be fun anymore, it would be work. No offense intended to anyone that does earn a living from photography, but it's not for me. Although my day time job interferes with my hobbies, it pays the bills and supports my hobbies (obses...

Re: Image Quality
I am an amateur (not a good one) who likes photography. Sury I'm in the same boat. However, I like to think I'm getting better! When I stop getting better it won't be fun anymore. I think you can answer your own question by shooting RAW and JPEG for a while and playing with the trial version of DxO...

Butterflys in the backyard
I was out in the back yard, trying to get the dogs to cooperate for a few shots before it got too warm. I looked over and saw a butterfly having it's way with the flowers on the hosta plants. I thought they would make a good subject for playing with the Neat Image plug in for CS4 I got last week. a7...

Re: Hard Case
IMRO Zero Haliburton makes the best aluminum cases. Storm cases, made by hardig are the best plastic cases. They are superior to Pelican which has more choices in size ... the gap is closing as Pelican is also now owned by Hardig. The "pick in pluck" foam for all of them is not very good. ...

Re: Man, Sony had better come with some KILLER FIRMWARE UPDATE!
A whole lot of people think that if they buy an expensive camera that their photos will be better than a cheap camera. I think everyone who buys an expensive camera thinks that, or they would have bought the cheap one! Mike Edit - Looking at this post, I thought it might be interpreted as bei...

Re: New Models - Path to Profitability?
So if they want to reduce production costs, why did they dump the A200-350 series, all they needed to do was give them a re-fresh, but instead changed the body style completely. Surely that added to cost, re-tooling and production costs etc?? That's a numbers game; manufacturing savings versus non-...

Re: New Models - Path to Profitability?
I have been saying they have been stripping costs from the alpha line for quite sometime now...this is -Sonolta I'm not sure that's a totally bad thing. They are pushing the leading edge of technology and bringing the price down. I'm just thinking that this round of new models has nothing new to of...

New Models - Path to Profitability?
My theory is that the new alpha models have nothing to do with new features. They are Sony's attempt to make the alpha line profitable. The impetus for the new models was to reduce the manufacturing costs. I suspect that the alpha line is not profitable and is considered a cost of remaining relevant...

Re: Service manual for Sony A850 Online @ Sony HK
You cannot seriously suggest that newer models should be "worse" than older ones. I didn't suggest that the new models "should be" anything. I simply pointed out the reality that the driving force behind the new models is not to add new features it's to reduce production cost. T...

Re: Man, Sony had better come with some KILLER FIRMWARE UPDATE!
What makes you think that the a900 or a700 will still be made once the replacement models with much lower production costs are established?

Lower Production Costs
I suspect that for every DSLR that Sony sells to someone that ever takes it out of Program Mode, they sell 20 to people that either use it once a year on vacation or use it till the baby is 6 months old and then get tired of carrying it and switch to their cell phone. Serious photographers should be...

Re: DXO and CS4 (64 bit)
The response from DxO:
"Thank you for writing. No, the program is not yet certified to work with Photoshop CS4-64. It is only certified to work with Windows 64-bit."
Not the answer I was hoping to hear but they get kudos for a quick response on the weekend!

DXO and CS4 (64 bit)
Does anyone know if the DXO plug-in works in CS4 (64 bit)? The DXO installation manager wants to install in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Plug-ins versus C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins. So it works in the 32 bit version (C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\A...

Those are some great pictures. That star fish is either giving me the finger or he's a cone head.
