Re: Something for the Northern Lights

Thanks for the pointers. We might end up going to Swedish Lapland rather than Finland, partly to make life easier with flights but hopefully our luck will be in. From reading around it seems the cold shortens battery life, so it's best to keep spares inside your clothes rather than in a camera bag. ...

Something for the Northern Lights

It's looking likely we'll spend a few nights looking for the Northern Lights in Finland early next year. 8) The best choices out of my existing kit bag would seem to be the SAM 35mm f/1.8 or CZ 16-80mm. Would anyone suggest something faster or wider (to go on my a550)? Potential options so far look ...

Re: a550 Question - Continous Advance

Thanks David - is that a typo (Alpha 55) as my camera is an A550.

a550 Question - Continous Advance

I've spent today on a birds-of-prey photography course at Hardwick Hall . FWIW, I was the only A-mount user, with all but two others (Nikon) using Canon. Anyway, in AF-C with continous advance (high), is it correct the camera only will only release the shutter when it thinks something is in focus (d...

Re: CZ 16-80 S/H opinions and advice OR Tamron 17-50 f2.8

Nice shots.

I'm currently debating between the CZ 16-80, Sony 16-105 or Sigma 17-70 HSM. Decisions, decisions.

Re: Wide angle comparision

Thanks David. I was -6 in 1970, so I'm a long way behind on experience! I've got a very similar picture to that - somewhere! I might have taken it with my Dynax 5 which would explain why it's not on my media PC. I'm off to Edinburgh next week, so my 18-55 will have to do as I've done far too much pr...

Does anyone know of pictures showing an 8mm vs 11mm picture on a crop body?

Re: Wide angle comparision

Thanks gents - for some reason I keep putting the Tokina down as a 11-18 not 11-16, no idea why.

I'm looking for something wider for landscapes and in-building or places where you can't back-up to get more in.

Wide angle comparision

I'd like to get a lens which is a bit wider than 18-55 kit (came with my A550) - good ol' GAS :D The Tokina 11-18mm looks to be a good choice at a sensible price, though I have thought the Sony 16-105mm would see more use at the expense of the wide end. http://www.flickr.com/photos/zubeyrk/372220217...

Re: 85/2.8 35/1.8 24/2 MTF curves on sony Japan

I see the 35mm 1.8 is £149 on RGBPhoto.

Quite tempted at that price - I've used my Minolta 50mm 1.7 indoors a lot when on holiday (usually places that don't allow flash) and something wider would be great.

I had decided to save up for a Tokina 11-18mm though

Re: Lens Recommendations for Upcoming Vacation?

We're a big fan of the Cote du Rhone (yellow label, red font IIRC) that the ED Supermarkets in Provence sell. About 1 euro a bottle and is magic - you don't get a hangover from it. Bonnieux and Lourmarin are nice little villages. We visited them in March and Bonnieux was deserted. I'm trying to reme...

Re: New Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG OS

Indeed.

Intro 2020 have the RRP of the Tamron at £429 inc VAT (for the UK). WHE list the Sigma (assuming I've found the right one) for £293.

Hopefully the Tamron will get reviewed somewhere to see if it's worth the extra.

Re: New Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG OS

I wonder how this will compare with the new Tamron 70-300?

The Tamron is at least 3 to 4 weeks away from coming into the UK according to Intro 2020

Re: GAS - Lens Suggestions

Whilst pondering your options, do you find yourself checking the £399 ZA @ Jessops several times a day, just in case you miss the offer?

I'm still tempted by it, though I reckon the weakest lens in my bag is my old Minolta 70-300, so I'm leaning towards a Sony 70-300 G to replace that...
