Re: My RX100 first report - review now up
I've just confirmed that I did refer to Micro USB, I've made it clearer by capitalising Mini USB as well to ensure that I am referring to a standard. I have checked the stabilisation and added this paragraph, as the Active video stabilisation is definitely pixel shift: When shooting video in 16:9 f...

Re: My RX100 first report - review now up
Video steadyshot is Active Optical SteadyShot, not pixel shift. Also, the USB port is a Micro USB port, used by many devices. It's less common than the old mini-USB B ports but it will be supplanting them in the future since it's much harder to break than the Mini USB B ports. It's not Sony propriet...

Re: Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 old vs. new
The VC version (even with it disabled) will not be available for Minolta/Sony mount, so the comparison is a bit moot.

Re: A55/A33 photos can be taken with mirror lifted
Unless someone can read Korean, we're not sure how they did it, since the mirror sticks through the bayonet. You could do it by putting in a extension tube to space the lens out farther so the mirror would clear. Of course you loose infinity focus if you do that, no free lunch :-) Walt You know, Wa...

Re: DPreview guys in a twist again
The NEX, A33 and A55 show a dark screen even with internal flash or external on-camera sony flash when put in M-Mode? So actually those cameras are really always blind in M-Mode with flash balanced to be near the only light? That really sounds much worse than I thought before. No, if you have the b...

Re: DPreview guys in a twist again
I'm not following exactly what the kerfuffel is about, couldn't the A33 use an F56-F58 in M mode mounted on the hotshoe to trigger the slaved studio lights/flashes? (I heard that 'some' earlier model flashes just do a full dump when used on DSLR's, so the ones DK listed might be fine but others mig...

Re: DPreview guys in a twist again
But the Sony adapters don't have all four pins on their feet. The FA-HS1AM only has a ground and sync pin, as opposed to the older Minolta FS-1100 which as you know has all four, but no "flash ready" circuitry since it's just a passthrough. Flash Ready is pin F2 on Michael's diagram. How ...

Re: DPreview guys in a twist again
I had posted in the thread, and I had mentioned that the adapters won't work because they're missing the serial data pins. They simply don't exist, so they can't provide any kind of voltage or data at all. Was just trying to save the guy some money and grief. I'm of the opinion that it should be a m...

Perhaps they "sacrificed a camera to science," as it were, and simply disassembled the mirror from the mirror box.

Re: Tilt and Shift... with the NEX system
I should have said Canon EF or 4/3rds (but 4/3rds is no use for TS), I realise Nikon G has an actuator. That's interesting in one other way, it might be possible for a third party to modify the E-to-A adaptor which has an actuator motor, to produce a Nikon adaptor with the same. David This could be...

Re: Tilt and Shift... with the NEX system
And call it the Vectis mount ? :-) I think any attempt to switch to an electronic aperture would mean using a hybrid mount, retaining the physical lever but having this control an electronic adjustment - and work with all older cameras. New cameras without a physical lever would only work with elec...

Re: Sigma 17-50 2.8 vs Tamron 17-50 2.8
I'd be curious as to the aperture breakdown of the 17-70. If it's anything like Sigma's usual shenanigans, it's f/2.8 at 17mm, then drops to 3.5 immediately, and then probably hits f/4 around 50mm. Even in this ungenerous scenario, the Sigma would still be 1/3 to 2/3 stop faster than the 16-80 thro...

Re: Sigma 17-50 2.8 vs Tamron 17-50 2.8
The 17-50 has been a reliable workhorse for me. However, sacrificing the constant f/2.8 for some range is a perfectly acceptable tradeoff if you're outdoors on a sunny day. I'd be curious as to the aperture breakdown of the 17-70. If it's anything like Sigma's usual shenanigans, it's f/2.8 at 17mm, ...

Re: PMA round up
In the end, I was not offered the 'make a choice' decision because the plans never materialised. But I made it clear I would be unlikely to accept such terms. I understand why they work like this, it is a culture where legal aspects count in a big way. David Non-disclosure is a big deal for these g...
