Re: Sony A58 "plastic lens mount"
I have had only one Sony SLR and one SLT. The A700 and the A77. Before that I had a KM 7D and before that I was using Minolta film SLRs. I know that it depends on how much you can afford but there are always cheaper models intended as starter cameras and for people who are casual users. Then there a...

Re: Interesting (?) DRO Observation
It looks to me like the second shot may have more exposure rather than just DRO so could it be that you had accidentally set the drive mode to bracket but didn't keep the shutter button pressed for long enough to get the third exposure?

Re: Sony A58 "plastic lens mount"
Going back to the original question about the plastic mount, I too am as prejudiced as any of you about plastic being used. BUT you know what? It probably is just prejudice. Plastics have come a long way since I was involved in mechanical engineering in the 80s and I bet that what they are using is ...

Re: Video with A77. How to get started.
Thanks David,
That was a really useful reply that has answered most of my questions. You are the man! Unfortunately I don't have an Apple computer. I think that the next step for me will be to take some tests and have a play.
Many thanks for your help.

Re: Is this forum dying?
There is an astonishing level of negativity in the forum and it is off putting. There are only three things that are certain in life: you will be taxed, you will die and you will experience change. Change can be good or bad but in my experience it is usually perceived as bad only because we are cond...

Re: Nikon, Olympus, Sony reported their 3rd quarter results
It would not have been viable to take the A700 and 're-vamp' it. If you put a tilting screen in and a new sensor with live view and video (all modern SLRs have these so Sony would not be able to leave them out), the body would have to be changed, the sensor mounting and steadyshot mechanism and the ...

Re: A77 - how to get started
Hey, thanks very much for the reply. I was wondering if I had upset everyone somehow. I guess that we must be the only ordinary forum members that are trying video. I was hoping though that David would chip in with some advice as I am sure that he has the answers. The reasons that I am thinking of g...

Re: Autostakkert
Did you use video to get your 40 images? Nice shot. Craters and mountains become much better defined on the 'terminator' which is the transition from light to dark when the moon is not full. I expect that you know that though, in which case forgive me. I used to do a bit of astronomy but at the time

A77 - how to get started
Can anyone help me with the file format settings on the A77? I want to get started with video, initially only in a small way. I am thinking of getting Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 for editing. Assuming that I have that, should I set the A77 to 50p 28m AVCHD for best quality and can I then convert i...

Video with A77. How to get started.
I am a complete dumbo with video. Can anyone help me with some of the basic choices on my A77? AVCHD or MP4? 50i, 50p, 25p 24M or 17M? Once this is decided what is the desired shutter speed to aim for? I only want to take some shots of my granddaughters but I know that once I start I will want to go...

Re: Image Manipulation
I enjoyed all of these great pics. Image manipulation has been with photography from its very inception. Google Henry Peach Robinson, Oscar Reijlander or Bill Brandt. By the way even Bill Brandt's early documentary photography was not entirely straight. Did you know that the maid in his famous pictu...

Re: Software and firmware updates
Very disappointing isn't it. Still, we must remember that it is not possible to alter everything with firmware. There again we knew what we were getting when we bought it. At least we should have done if we had read the specs.

Re: Anyone any experience with UK sony repair? Brand new 5R
My experience of the Sony Pencoed repair centre was good. Try to get them to repair it under warranty. Even though I had damaged my A77 by falling on it some of the repair was paid for under warranty.
