Re: Nice film scanner?
Zeb: I have already tried your suggestion, and it works. Re: Nice film scanner?
Thanks a lot Zeb! I’ll try your suggestion. If it works, I guess a DSLR+Macro lens combo can be one of the best (and most convenient) alternatives to scanning 35mm film (slides and negatives). (Of course, a macro lens, a copystand and a lightbox are quite more expensive than the scanner you are cons...

Re: Nice film scanner?
Does anyone know of any software that could do the negative-positive conversion? I have ‘scanned’ slides with my A100 (and Tamron 90mm Di at 1:1 magnification) with good results, but cannot do the same with negatives unless such sort of software (or perhaps an alternative method) exists.

Re: Depth of field (practical) theory
Thanks to everyone for the comments and links, and especially to Olaf, for chiming in and pointing out the inaccuracies and mistakes contained in my short and quick explanation. (Needless to say it was by no means intended as an ‘article’, but rather as a sort of quick reference field guide!) NOTE: ...

Depth of field (practical) theory
The depth of field in a photograph depends on two factors: 1) The aperture, 2) The magnification (or reproduction) ratio, ie, the relation between the size of the subject in reality and the size of its image on the sensor (or on the film). (For example, a magnification ratio of 1:1 means that the im...

Re: High Quality A900 Sample Photos
Dr. Harout: As it is not easy at all to pick up the general principles (about depth of field) from a few examples, I think it could be useful to complement your explanations by stating those general principles. But as the theory of depth of field has nothing to do with “A900 Sample Photos”, I’ll pos...

Re: A (stitched) landscape (just before David receives his A900)
ah! panoramas, panoramas... I'm trying to figure out how to scan my XPan slides -and keep all the detail those beautiful Hassy/Fujinon/Horsemann lenses provide. I'm waiting for the A900 in order to set up a "repro" system and convert my slides using the DSRL: Scan is slow and tiring. Pako...

Re: A (stitched) landscape (just before David receives his A900)
David and Pako, thanks for your (as usual) interesting comments. The depth of field issue is perhaps the main downside to the A900 as a landscape camera (in relation to a smaller format camera). After shooting several years with a Fuji GSW690III (6x9cm format) and Fujichrome Velvia (ISO 50), I was r...

A (stitched) landscape (just before David receives his A900)
Hello! The first title I thought was: “A100 stitching as a poor man’s A900 (a landscape)”, but as I am (as everybody) waiting expectantly for David’s A900 report, I decided to change the title… Pelegrina (Spain) http://lh4.ggpht.com/alfake74/SNJDShETHVI/AAAAAAAAAws/fgxTG9pJ148/s400/PELEGRINA-2008-00...

Re: A landscape (A100 + Mamiya 300mm)
Thank you very much, David, for your responses (you seem to have used everything in the market!). Your comments on the 70-300mm SSM and on medium format lenses and digital backs have been very helpful. On the whole, I conclude that my Mamiya lenses will most probably be ‘sharp enough’ on 35mm full f...

Re: Alpha700
wave_wizard, welcome! If I had to choose, #3 would be my favourite, although the little branch behind the bird's head is a bit distracting (I found shooting birds an extremely difficult task, so I gave up). And Sonolta, thanks a lot for your (as usual wonderfully illustrated) advice (in these thread...

Re: A landscape (A100 + Mamiya 300mm)
David has recently written on several threads about vignetting and distortions suffered by the 70-300mm SSM when used on the A900. (For example: “After trying the 70-300mm SSM on the A900, I realise it is intended mainly for the A700 (better illumination and geometry on the smaller format, by far).”...

Re: A landscape (A100 + Mamiya 300mm)
David, thanks for your comments about the telephoto lenses. (I expected the Sony 70-300mm G to beat the Mamiya 300mm in terms of resolution, and your photo seems to prove it.) where is Pelegrina's Castle? It looks like an exceptional landmark. Pelegrina lies about 130 km to the north-east of Madrid ...

Re: A landscape (A100 + Mamiya 300mm)
David and Javelin, thanks for the comments. I would also like to know whether I am losing too much by using the Mamiya 300mm or not. (I have no other 300mm. Would either the Tamron 70-300mm or the Sony 70-300mm G be significantly better at 300mm f11?) Centre (1:1 crop) http://lh4.ggpht.com/alfake74/...
