Re: flash for taking photos of band gigs in dark environments.

I have used a Minolta 135/2.8 at a distance with excellent results. For more drama get in close and use a fast wide-ish angle, although beware flare if you go too wide. Also make sure your lens is sharp enough at full / nearly full aperture - some are but not all. Obviously DOF will be an issue wide...

Re: Minolta 100mm f/2

If anyone seriously wants to buy one of these this now seems to be the going price. This seller (see link) is reliable and sold another one earlier in the week for the same price. They had a batch of 50/3.5 macros a few weeks ago and I bought one and was delighted both with the lens and also with th...

Re: T.O.P and the Sony A900

Personally I don't care tuppence what a camera looks like so long as it is ergonomically designed and handles well. As a user of the Minolta 5600 HSD I do care that the A900 has no pop-up flash which can trigger off camera flash units wirelessly, not forgetting the need to buy the expensive Sony 58A...

Re: Minolta 100mm f/2

Well, this is clearly the market price because it's gone already. I saw another one a couple of weeks ago at a similar price and that went in a brace of shakes too!

Re: T.O.P and the Sony A900

Another sensible commentary from an adult (rather than the juveniles who mostly populate the popular photographic press). However, it seems to me (as a mere ham) that Sony now needs to populate its lens catalogue if it is really going to take on Nikon. Nice to read, nevertheless.

Re: Jordan landscape

Well, the saturation does appear to have tweaked the sky into an unnaturally jewel-like blue, but the rest of the image looks like something my dad shot many years ago on his Ricoh. No saturation tweaks, just curves (a left-shift in the white point to the edge of the histogram) and 15% lifting of s...

Travel lens

Having just returned from a trip to Jordan using two cameras (Voigtlander with 21/4 and Sony A700 with SAL18250) I thought I'd check on the focal length usage of the latter. Despite having the Voigtlander for the real wide angle stuff, the ratio of shots taken on the Sony A700 in the 18-80 range to ...

Re: Panasonic G1 sensor v. D300 & D3

Agree about AP. Their scoring system is plain silly and the reviews are obsessed with noise issues. Pity, they used to be rather good.

Re: Posting flower photos on Alamy

Very interesting, David, thank you very much. I have to say I find the whole issue of key words on Alamy, with descending orders of relevance, hard to fathom. I consider myself pretty articulate but there are limits to the number of relevant keywords for most subjects I can think of apart from one o...
