Re: AF micro-adjustment

I can't tell as I had removed all of mine - they did not seem to be helping. I put quite some time and effort in finding the proper AF micro-adjustments for some of my most-used lenses ... and what I found is this: It's incredibly hard to find settings that actually improve things rather than messi...

Re: Firmware update announced for A850/A900

My adjustment is quite severe, -9 I think. I guess I am going to have to re-test it. Umm ... I wonder if the camera keeps all the AF micro-adjustment settings after the firmware update!? Maybe it's better to cycle through your lenses and make notes before installing the update, in case you want/hav...

Re: Photoshop Elements 9

You can always use the latest Adobe DNG Converter to convert your currrent Sony or Canon raw files to DNG, then use Camera Raw 3.7 in Photoshop CS2 to handle these. I think Camera Raw itself also can convert from any proprietary raw to DNG, so if you have the latest Camera Raw in Photoshop Elements ...

So AF speed has been improved indeed. Now I wonder if AF accuracy also has changed ... be it for the better or the worse :?

Re: Firmware update announced for A850/A900

I just downloaded firmware 2.00 for Sony A900 a few minutes ago from Sony Europe's website. Haven't installed it yet; will do it later today.

Re: Lightroom - Exporting ARW files with adjustments

... my research suggests that I would be at no disadvantage, and might possibly be at an advantage in some cases, if I convert to DNG files on import. That would seem to be the easiest way to deal with this issue, too. Any thoughts on format preferences? Converting from ARW to DNG has many advantag...

Re: Lightroom - Exporting ARW files with adjustments

When making adjustments to raw files that are no DNG files then the adjustments will get stored either in XMP side-car files or in the central Lightroom database. Check your Lightroom preference settings to find out which option is selected! In order to be able to transfer the images files including...

Re: Memory card speed

As far as I know, the Sony A900 supports the UDMA-5 mode but not UDMA-6 (i. e. the latter will be treated as UDMA-5, as higher UDMA modes always include the lower ones). The SanDisk Extreme is an UDMA-5 card; the SanDisk Extreme Pro is an UDMA-6 card. So the Sony A900 cannot fully exploit the Extrem...

Re: Old lenses worth seeking out

All the old prime Minolta AF lenses are pretty good, some even excellent. The AF 20 mm 1:2.8 and the AF 24 mm 1:2.8 are not so great but still worth having. They do need some stopping-down for the corners to sharpen up. Also the AF 50 mm 1:1.7 and AF 50 mm 1:1.4 I consider good but not excellent; st...

Re: LR and camera raw

Lightroom, or more specifically its development module, basically is Camera Raw. You can think of Lightroom as the stand-alone version of Camera Raw, and then some. So no, the Camera Raw plug-in is not required to run Lightroom; it's already built-in.

Re: Raw Advice

I may just buy PSE 8 as there are plenty of half-price offers at the moment. Plenty of half-price offers on an Adobe product usually is a strong indication that the successor version is lurking just around the corner. On the other hand, Photoshop Elements 8 has been released ony eight months ago .....

Re: Hyperfocal distance

So by your definition DOF is no shallower in FF than APS. In fact DOF does not exist! Huh!? Are you nuts? I never 'defined' such a nonsense. Of course DOF does exist. However DOF is DOF and the plane of focus is something else. ... control of DOF is an important part of composition. Sure it is. Sti...

Re: Hyperfocal distance

circle of confusion n. -- A group of photographers desperately trying to understand depth-of-field . Yes, 0.02 mm is the 'correct' maximum diameter of the circle of confusion for APS-C format, and slightly more than 2 m is about right for the hyperfocal distance of an 18 mm lens on an APS-C-format ...
