Re: Flowers 2012 (Photoclubalpha Phlora!)

No actual flowers here. Maybe this should be in a separate thread named "Once and Future Flora". http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc452/jcoffin01/_DSC0016.jpg Fragility in the snow. http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc452/jcoffin01/_DSC0038.jpg The scrub oaks dance. http://i1212.photo...

Re: Corel bought out Bibble

I've used Bibble for quite a while. Yes, you can do non-destructive editing (even with layers). Their layers aren't easy to understand at first, but work well once you're accustomed to them (i.e., they emphasized easy of use over ease of learning). Yes, the edits are stored in a sidecar file (or, I ...

Corel bought out Bibble

Although it hasn't been published particularly widely, it appears that Corel recently bought out Bibble Labs. Corel have just announced a new product, AfterShot Pro , which appears to be based fairly closely on Bibble. For any who haven't used it, this is (at least intended to be) a direct competito...

Re: It's Canon, but interesting as a response to NEX and oth

The problem here isn't with disposing of the lenses after use (most glass is fairly inert) but the energy put into creating a lens in the first place. A food jar might easily contain as much or more actual glass, but the energy to create one is quite small. The expenditure to create lenses is high e...

Re: It's Canon, but interesting as a response to NEX and oth

The DSC-R1 has a larger sensor than the G1X and the lens is also larger. Yup -- does look pretty nasty. Doing a quick check, it appears that it is off the market though, so there's probably no longer much to do about it. On the other hand, doing some looking it appears that the DSC-HX100V and Nikon...

Re: It's Canon, but interesting as a response to NEX and oth

It's not really sudden or new at all, it just happened to arise as a topic. For another example, I find laptops, tablet computers and all-in-one desktops (e.g., iMac's) objectionable for many of the same reasons. It just happens that those have never arisen as topics here. I can't really comment int...

Re: It's Canon, but interesting as a response to NEX and oth

I've said so elsewhere already, but I'll repeat it here: I think this is not only a poor idea, but a truly evil one. It's one thing to discard the tiny lens in a typical compact camera after a short time just because the sensor and features are obsolete. It's quite another (at least in my opinion) t...

Re: The new 180mm Sigma looks pretty...

It looks like Sony isn't the only one to re-use (without proper editing) old merchandising material now and again. At least as it's quoted on SAR, the press release for the 19mm claims to be equivalent to a 38mm on a full-frame. That would be true on a 4/3rds camera, but on a NEX (APS-C sensor) it's...

I, at least, see no reason to stop the "rant" -- though I hadn't had a chance to say so recently, I've been enjoying it greatly so far. I, for one, welcome "rants" like yours.

Re: Sigma focusing anomaly

Focusing is done by analyzing the image -- but the camera uses information from the ROM to figure out how to translate what it analyzes in the image into physical movements in the lens. I can see (at least) two obvious possibilities for problems. One is that there was information present in the olde...

Hmm...if you'll forgive my playing with it a bit, perhaps an edit somewhere between the two would work:

That bridge reminds me a lot of what I think of as the military mindset: extensive, careful planning to ensure against any minor glitches getting in the way of making a massive blunder!

Re: A77 EVF - Technical Question

While you have some point, I think it's also worth mentioning that on an EVF you can magnify parts of the picture. At least for those of us with limited eyesight, this can give an EVF greater effective resolution than an OVF (and, of course, you can do the same with live view). While my experience w...

I have to agree -- #1 is really nice. The B&W works extremely well for this one.
