Re: AfterShot Pro and Lightroom

I originally got LR1 as a free offer for those who had Raw Shooter Pro (when rawshooter sold itself to adobe). So it was a pretty easy choice, and I've gained a lot of experience with it. I've recently downloaded profiles for Minolta and Sony DSLRs for LR from: http://www.piraccini.net/2011/02/profi...

Re: AfterShot Pro and Lightroom

LR has a "clarity" slider, which I use to give a "pop" to my shots. ASP doesn't have this. In the ASP shot, it appears that there is a slight haze over everything. I was able to get the pop back by using "local contrast enhancement" in PSP -- Unsharp mask with large ra...

Re: AfterShot Pro and Lightroom

I had mentioned in a earlier post that LR3 had a blocky sub texture when converting a-mount raws (at least KM7D and A700). I took one raw shot from my KM7D and processed it in both LR3 and ASP. I noticed a couple of things when looking at the "developed" image in each program. At 1:1, I co...

Re: AfterShot Pro and Lightroom

I find your comments regarding your experience with the two programs very interesting. I currently use LR3 for raw conversion an much of my editing. However, for certain things such as color swapping for IR photography and anything where I need to use layers, I have to export a Tiff (16 bit) to Pain...

Re: Corel bought out Bibble

I still am not sure how much utility keeping the history is in this sort of non-destructive editor, but it is there and might be useful sometimes. I used it a few times. For example the first time I convert and edit a raw, I might have to straighten the image, de-spot the image, and make basic expo...

Re: Sony A55 officially discontinued in Japan! - per SAR

I find "officially" and "SAR" in the same sentence to be somewhat amusing.

Re: Corel bought out Bibble

LR does retain the history going back to the beginning and shows it whenever you reopen the file to work on it. But it even retains all of your trials. So when I work with the exposure controls and try a little of this and a little of that and then finally decide on the mid point, the history shows ...

Re: Corel bought out Bibble

One reason I was interested in LR4 was based on some comparisons on DYXUM of high ISO shots processed with the raw engine from LR2 vs the new one in LR4 -- essentially much less noise while still retaining fine detail (although the change in exposure adjusting controls doesn't impress me.) Take a l...

Re: Corel bought out Bibble

I was disappointed when Adobe released LR 4 Beta that it only works on Vista and later OS. My main photo processing systems are both XP, and I'm not ready to upgrade and reinstall all my software/hardware or buy a 3rd desktop system. I do have a netbook with Win 7, but it's slow enough, that I might...

Re: Extra-Fine vs. Fine JPEGs

I always use extra fine in the KM5D and as it's only a 6MP camera I think it makes sense, the JPEG's always looked quite ok photo quality wise too me so I never bothered with RAW very much. But with a camera that's 24MP I don't know if it would make any difference at normal print size or on screen ...

Re: Sony SLT-A77 DPR review

David, Thanks for the info. One of the things about EVFs that made me uncomfortable was that often when going to change something, the image would be replaced by the setting info or overlaid with semi transparent settings. The method Sony is using on the A77 seems to make more sense. And I realize t...

Re: Sony SLT-A77 DPR review

Just something I noticed or rather didn't on the DPR review I can't see a mention of quick nav unless I missed it? What's the story on that one? Minor point but still puzzling Quick nav is gone, unfortunately. Isn't something like it accessed by pressing the Fn button? From what I read in the unbel...

Re: A noisy world on the A77

David, That would have been a good answer from Sony ("We wanted the high memory data throughput performance, but that reader wasn't available in a dual slot unit") instead of the one they gave. One says we are trying to optimize a camera. The other says it was just a business price/feature...

Re: A noisy world on the A77

Yes. I was taking a few days' break and got the A77 the day before, so shot Raw + JPG to be safe. The jpgs have a great tonal quality, but some of the fine detail appears smeared, for want of a better word. Any detail which has contrast (twigs etc. in a landscape) are beautifully sharp, but some sh...

Re: Pace of change accelerating

Oops! I forgot this was the NEX forum, but I think that most of the discussion below would apply to that as well. But I will add, I don't consider the NEX as satisfying any need I have right now. When I use the fuji 3D camera, I usually have a number of shots where I wish I had a DSLR with the same ...
