Re: Anyone bought a new scanner recently?

I use a 35mm film scanner for my slides and negatives that I bought in 2000. It is a Minolta Dimage Scan Elite F-2900 film scanner and instead of the Minolta software I use the superior Vuescan. I have been using Vuescan since it was beta version 0.7 in 1998 (command line utility way back then). Thi...

Re: Back to SLR thoughts and ramblings

I think the post and the previous one is along the lines of "flamebait" There is no discussion, just posting links. Gets a bit boring really. This isn't news, come back when there is real news... This gave me the best chuckle of the day. Thank you! You are the poster boy for making ...

Re: Ryzen Mini PC vs. Laptop

Right now I am thinking about the M1 Mac Mini with 16gb, 512gb SSD. Since I am in Japan my choices in computers are more limited than in the U.S. and usually prices are a lot higher here, but I can get the M1 Mac Mini and the price is essentially the same as in the U.S. I have read reviews and watc...

Re: Back to SLR thoughts and ramblings

Former Nikon GM says the DSLR era has ‘already ended’ Tetsuro Goto feels Nikon would be wise to focus solely on mirrorless moving forward. But he does regret not making the D900. https://www.popphoto.com/news/nikon-gm-says-dslr-era-over/ Former Nikon general manager and product designer, Tetsuro Go...

Re: 20 years ago: Minolta D7i

Thank you. I sold my D7i in 2004 after it had sat unused for almost a year. I bought a Canon 300D (Digital Rebel) + 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens in 2003 and started using it. I bought 128mb and 256mb CF cards to use with the D7i -- each was over $100 when I bought them, but the price was dropping becau...

Re: Back to SLR thoughts and ramblings

News from today in Japan. Nikon stops developing new SLR cameras https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20220713_18/ There are many millions of SLRs/DSLRs and lenses out there in the used market and will be for decades so that is a very good thing. Of course Nikon is getting out of DSLRs, the only...

Re: Back to SLR thoughts and ramblings

I am reminded of this 2010 prediction/boast: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/37202921 Only now with NEX and dSLT is Sony actually making market share inroads. And when the 77 and 500/4 get released in the spring, I expect to see huge numbers of Sonys at the sidelines of major sporting events sin...

Re: Jay Maisel loves his Nikon 28-300mm

If camera makers want to get people interested, prices are going to have to come down. (once the chip thing is over!). I suspect cameras like computers, phones, etc. are going to be in shorter supply, harder to get, and maybe more expensive going forward for quite awhile. This short clip is good: P...

I stopped by the super big Yodobashi in Akihabara, Tokyo recently. Re: The Changed World

I am back in Tokyo for a week. Last time was in January 2020 just before the pandemic hit. I was in Shinjuku walking around today and I noticed that this camera store is gone now. Closed up. I did not investigate to find out if it has just moved or is gone for good. A good chance that it is gone tho...

20 years ago: Minolta D7i

I am shaking my head in sort of disbelief that it has been 20 years since I bought my Minolta D7i in May 2002. It was not my first digital (I had a 1.3mp Olympus and a 2.1mp Olympus before), but it was the one that got me to put aside my film cameras. th-2835498608.jpg PICT0400.jpg PICT0659.jpg PICT...
