JT, awesome link. Atacama is just south of here. Looks like I need to just carry my photo gear back up and make a timelapse.

Re: Night shots - open thread
Hi Yildiz. Thanks for the comments. In regards to the last one, the white on the horizon is the lights from the large city of Arequipa, in the lowlands beyond the mountains. The water is a very shallow "dead" lake. That is, it doesn't have any way for the water to leave. It is a salt lake ...

Re: first colorizing attempt at B&W
Dusty, sorry about the late reply. I haven't gotten on the forum very much in the last year or so.
I used PS elements and a tutorial that I found on YouTube but have no idea how to find it again and I have no idea what I did at the time.

Re: Milky Way
Sury, looks like you are learning quite a bit. I’d like to add thought or two. 1. Make sure the stars are in focus. Manual focus is really just about the only way to go. 2. Take the camera off steadyshot mode. 3. Use a firm, solid tripod or mount. I only say that because I noticed that a couple of t...

Re: Night shots - open thread
Here are a couple that I shot the other night and the way back into town. Elevation is just over 14,200 ft (4328 meters) and makes for some clear skies. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48449446582_a4b0bc724c_c.jpg Milky Way by Jeff Anderson , on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/4844929...

Re: Night shots - open thread
Jeff, I took the advise of JB and input from you. Watched Youtube on taking photos and post processing. I took the liberty of using your photo to experiment in LR. I sincerely apologize if I took undue liberty in experimenting with your photo without your prior consent. Please let me know and I wil...

Re: Night shots - open thread
You're certainly welcome, but remember, I'm no expert in astro photography. Like JB said, YouTube is a friend. I did all my post-processing in LR on this particular photo. I think I could've done better with the foreground in PS.

Re: Night shots - open thread
Sury, I like using 15 sec for a still of the stars. It just helps reduce the star movement. Wide is your best bet. I use the Toking 11-16mm @ 11mm and f/3.2 and iso 800. Light pollution can be a problem at times. The yellow glow at the bottom of the Milky Way in my photo is due to a city of only 50,...
