Re: Looking to buy a scanner
I have an Epson Perfection 4870 flatbed scanner which can do negs and slides as well as reflective documents and has both USB 2.0 and Firewire slots. The beauty of this machine is that you can scan a contact sheet at once if you like for 35mm (slides or negs) or several negs / slides at a time for m...

Re: We're in danger of losing our memories
I may be losing the plot here but right now I don't see the point of high resolution lenses and bodies if you're not going to print at a reasonable size. Images on digital photo-frames, apart from being too small, are not going to benefit from hi-res until the screens themselves are a whole lot bett...

Re: Reducing A900's noise with filters
David, would you mind elaborating on why you (apparently) dislike ACR? From my perspective it is free whereas Capture One Pro costs EUR 299 (and Capture One v 4 EUR 99). Now clearly you pays your money and takes your choice but as an amateur am I going to get worthwhile benefit from C1 vis a vis ACR...

Comprehensive A900 review
Apologies if this has already been flagged but I was searching for dynamic range comparisons and came across this review, which has a link to Imatest. I thought it worth posting a link to the actual A900 review because it seems extremely comprehensive and has stacks of comparative and technical test...

Re: We're in danger of losing our memories
But are tapes any safer than CDs or hard drives? - Digital deterioration may be a bigger problem than negative or print degradation in the long-term. Dry, dark, cool environment can keep analogue hard copy for decades, possibly centuries, we don't know yet. But instances of digital failure after onl...

Re: “UK prices - a steep climb ahead”
Japan will not manage the yen float. Period. It would be a disaster for them and is, in any case, quite unnecessary. Exports account for around 10%, maybe 12%, of Japan's GDP but are nonetheless the main contributor to growth because domestic demand has been flat to down. Unfortunately Chinese deman...

Which is your most used / favourite lens(es)?
Mine have been the Minolta 85/1,4 G(D) and the 50/1.4. However, I have just acquired the Sony 18-250 and I suspect that it will get a lot of general use, particularly when travelling. I am still amazed by this - when I started with SLRs 28mm was considered very wide and the idea of a 14 x zoom range...

Re: Indian train in the early 1980s
A day on I'm not really sure why I posted the train pic - not a great photo nor a great scan. The two here are better in both regards I think. The musician has been taken from another old scan. For the crowd scene I have taken David's advice and used Digital ICE (with an Epson Perfection 4870 flatbe...

Re: Indian train in the early 1980s
You could well be right. Yes it was scanned from negative using a Minolta Scan Dual III (2840). I now also have an Epson Perfection 4870 with Digital Ice so maybe I'll give it another try. Interestingly (for me at any rate) I had few beans to rub together when I took this (and many others) in India ...

It is a viaduct in Dinan, Brittany, France taken in 1962 or 63. As you can see life was quieter then.
