20 years ago: Minolta D7i

I am shaking my head in sort of disbelief that it has been 20 years since I bought my Minolta D7i in May 2002. It was not my first digital (I had a 1.3mp Olympus and a 2.1mp Olympus before), but it was the one that got me to put aside my film cameras. th-2835498608.jpg PICT0400.jpg PICT0659.jpg PICT...

Re: Looking back was some times better

I don't pay attention to DSLR stuff anymore, but today I happened to see a very nice used Canon 5D III for 85,500 yen - US$657 and a Nikon D750 for 94,500 yen - US$727 and those seem like very good prices. Are they typical these days? Should be easy to build a nice DSLR kit right now.

Re: Flight from Moscow to Tokyo

Today I was fooling around with Topaz Denoise AI 3.5 and I remembered these photos taken at ISO 3200 with my Canon G16. I ran one of the raw files through it and it did a really good job on the very noisy file without removing detail.

Re: Future of A mount

There are A-mount adapters for m4/3. I have one I bought in 2012 for $8 that allows manual focus and aperture adjustment. I tried it out, but never used it since I have m4/3 mount lenses, but it was cheap so I decided to get it since I still have several A-mount lenses (all back in the States though...

Re: Jay Maisel loves his Nikon 28-300mm

I have had the Olympus E-M1 II and Olympus 12-200mm f3.5-6.3 for 3 weeks or so and I like them a lot. I started a thread about them along with some sample, full-size photos. I added lots more info in further posts in that thread: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/65611240 E-M1 II + 12-200mm and E...

Re: Jay Maisel loves his Nikon 28-300mm

In 2019 Olympus came out with the 12-200mm f3.5-6.3 (24-400mm-efl). If it wasn't so much larger than the wonderful 14-150mm f4.5.6 (28-300mm-efl) then I would get one. I ordered a used 12-200mm yesterday so I will probably receive it in a couple of days. I also bought a used, but looks brand new, E...

A700: Man in the dark, Guanajuato, Mexico

A man at night in Guanajuato, Mexico in 2008. Actually, it was much darker than it appears in this photo because I brightened it up. I was sitting on a bench nearby for several minutes and the whole time I didn't even know he was there in the dark doorway. He moved though and it caught my eye and I ...

I am not surprised. Now that Nikon and Canon have started going all out for mirrorless with new lens mounts and new lenses they will focus on mirrorless gear and old DSLR gear will fall by the wayside.

Re: Ryzen Mini PC vs. Laptop

Right now I am thinking about the M1 Mac Mini with 16gb, 512gb SSD. Since I am in Japan my choices in computers are more limited than in the U.S. and usually prices are a lot higher here, but I can get the M1 Mac Mini and the price is essentially the same as in the U.S. I have read reviews and watch...

Re: Old camera appreciation!

The reason so many people recommend taking the lithium battery out of unused cameras is because sometimes they will start to leak and/or swell. I have seen many reports of damaged or destroyed cameras because of this. Back in 1988 I bought my first Minolta AF SLR, the 7000i. Soon I bought the 3200i ...
