Looking at the floor plan, they may have a bit more space - they appear to have the the same area as before, but also the adjacent stand along the side of the hall, that was occupied by some flash equipment if I remember rightly. Perhaps it will be a mug of coffee, rather than just a cup.

There was only one set of A7xx/A5xx mockups and they were not available for Focus, being used in Japan this week. No new lenses, no news. Sony does have some very neat new compacts - no raw files, the UK staff keep bashing away asking for raws or no-one will take the cameras seriously, Japan doesn't get why.

Their Bloggie device is really interesting as a video cam and panoramic one-shot 360 degree camera, and the provision of GPS together with compass direction information is an important step forward too.



The Sony stand photographed using my secret weapon - I found a long Minolta cable release for £3 at the show s/h, and lifted my A900 with 16mm as high as possible on my Benbo monopod to shoot pix like this of the stands.

They don't get why because it's not matching what their market research tells them. I'll bet they don't ask about RAW they probably ask about file size. so If I ask someone if they prefer a small file size that transfers and prints quickly or is ready to e-mail right from the camera. or a file that is huge needs post processing before printing they would obviously schoose the later. They've pretty much said there not marketing to Pros. which means there not really asking pros

I looked out for you, David, but didn't see you - little did I know you were busy photographing me [amongst others] - that's me sitting on the bench seat intently leaning forward - although to be honest, that macro-flower presentation wasn't really very interesting [ can't help but think interior designers will buy any old pic with OOF petals in it ! ]

I came back later and caught the end of the talk about shooting touring cars, which was more interesting - and was just getting ready to ask for a play with a 85/1.4 when my passengers called me to say they had seen all they wanted and could we go home...so I shot off to buy a Sig 70-200/2.8 from CameraWorld or Jacobs, but neither had it in Sony mount !

...so I only spent about £5 on a ham sarnie & some fizzy water.

I was being hauled around the stand for about 20 minutes before I took the pix, by Sony staff. The Ray Flash being used for the flower photos was my fault - I fixed up samples for Paul Genge, and apparently they went down reallty well, his advocate photographers grabbed hold of them and used them with the 58 gun.

My gain - I won myself a free Ray Flash as commission due to the number of sales they made at Focus after the Sony demos!

I sort of hoped I might buy something, I always like to leave Focus with something new. What I got in the end was a rubber skin for my Nikon D5000. I'm hoping it will reduce handling noise when shooting videos.

Sorry to have missed you - I was found by one member, on the Sony stand. I've been checking and the rig I made up allows a camera height around 11ft. I am about to buy an 8m pole to try some further experiments.

David, If you only met one member I suspect that must have been me. Nice to have met you. I was intrigued by the use of the monopod in the way that you did and it is interesting to see the resulting image.

BTW although difficult to be 100% certain from the size of the image on the screen I appear in the top right of the picture behind the man in the bright blue coat.

I used a monopod to shoot down at my wife and brother hiking ahead of me on a horse trail at Washington's Tiger Mountain. The resulting angle of view, combined with the scale of the larger trail, made them look like miniature 1/4 scale people.

I was tempted - had a look on the Flaghead stand - but decided for the price I'd rather get one of the Delta units selling through eBay - not as powerful, but I'm more interested in close-up rather than portrait work...

...was interesting to see the lens display - a number of things I hadn't realised - how small the 500 mirror is [esp when shown on the A900] - and how much 'fatter' the 300 SSM is than my HS [although I love all the switches & buttons on the newer model !]
