Nikon and serious advertising

Unread post by motor »

Last night I was tired and went to bed early for once. I turned on the TV which is usually on but my wife is watching and I am sleeping  I saw 3 commercials total on 2 different networks advertising the new mirrorless Nikon system V1 I think. I got a huge article last week from Adorama about it also. There final saying is "Never changed in 60 years. Same camera but portable" 2 different commercials had ashton kutcher with the camera and another one about some sporting event. Nikon is doing some serious advertising ( prime 1 minute slots, huge actor names, follow up commercials). Sony started a bit a few years back with Taylor swift and the new cybershot and one commercial with the NEX when the TV show Lost was ending. I have never seen anything since. I really wonder what would happen if they did really advertise?

Looks like Nikon still hold #1 position for DSLR sales http://www.dslrphoto.com/dslr/top-10-sa ... 29020.html despite being dumped on from a great height by every known disater, I'm not sure what they expect from the V1 thingy.

I saw a Sony TV ad for the NEX several days ago in the U.S.. It followed a Nikon 1 commercial that had aired several minutes earlier on the same program. Not positive, but I think I was watching a World Series game at the time. Don't recall much about either ad, but I remember thinking at the time that the Nikon ad was more impressive.

Certainly not in terms of global market share which goes to Canon.

I don't watch a great deal of TV but have recently seen adverts for Canon, Nikon and Sony here in the UK. They were all much of a muchness 'buy our product and you'll take the best pictures in the world' type thing - but it is good to see that Sony has realised they've got to get any potential camera buyers to realise they have products out there.

The only question is ....why Sony dumped so many less competitive entry level cameras which are inferior to competitors to damage its own image. The story of Apple told us there is no need for too many, one model is enough for all. A77 A65 are good, so are Nex cameras.

I haven't seen any Alpha TV spots, but they're pretty well saturating online ad spots, or have in the past, at least.

Has anyone seen any commercial on TV stations for A77?

@Grand Caliph: This Danish commercial looks very interesting and it has inovative idea with this pictures. I think Sony can do a lot better with the commercials, and hope so that they will do a good job in the future.

I only know for this that isn't standard commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bjzm_ygUuSo

There was another video with some rabbits and famous (?) pearson from the US that traveled all over to Korea for the shooting. But can't find it now.

Great for Nikon. This is an example of how to do a good job.

I had rather see Sony spend its money on R&D than TV ads. I don't buy a high end camera because a celebrity is getting payed to push it. I don't think anybody here would either.
But if Kim Kardashian carried a Sigma SD1.....nah. I still would have went with Sony.lol

Nikon have serious stock problems ala the Thailand flooding has wiped out some production. I believe Sony are also having big problems too.
Canon will exploit this over the festive season so it's a bad time for both the other makers.

On adverts..I never liked the "I am" Nikon campaign I thought it was rather crude and condescending!

Now, you have "serious advertising" on the Sony camp...
