need a low cost flash , the sony HVL-F42AM is over $500.00 in Australia which is a bit pricey since I only paid $820.00 for a a350 body new.
Cheers, Stephen

I looked at the eBay offers then looked up the specs and they are only any use as a camera top flash - I don't the slave operation is compatible with Sony wireless, unless they have changed something.

That's one of the problems with the Minolta/Sony proprietary flash shoe. There are no good old thyristor type dumb flashes for it that I can find. They all have to be TTL or ADI compatible and cost a small fortune. I don't need wireless, and I have slave units (optically triggered shoes) for any needed multi-flash shots. What I want is to just have a Vivitar 283/285 type flash that I can use on top the camera.
I HAVE to order one of those cheap shoe converters.

once you have the adaptor those flashes will work just fine.
Re: anyone used a Sunpak PZ40X or PZ42X Flash?
Going by Sunpak website, these flashes are available for Sony flash shoe and support TTL and ADI
So I guess if I'm not needing wireless I should be fine.
Thanks Stephen

I am looking for a lowish cost flash solution too...
The Sunpaks that you mentioned are apparently not compatible with Sony cameras as per the manufacturers site...
http://www.tocad.com/sunpak/flashunits.html
Do you have any links to Aus sellers for these or any other units?
cheers

Hi All
For the record, I just received a Sigma 530 DG Super flash. have yet to really use it, but it is big/heavy almost to big for the A350.
Looks like I'll need a vertical grip to better balance the camera
