Can HVL-F58AM work with the Maxxum 3600HS via wireless?

Unread post by cenwyn »

Hi, is it possible for the 3600HS to work together with the F58AM?

If so, is there guidance available on the web? Maybe a video?

Thank you.

Regards,
Cenwyn.

Yes. The 58 will operate the 3600/5600/56/42 as a remote; Both can be used together, controlled by the built-in flash. You can use ratio flash, with two 58s and one 3600 - one 58 on the camera (A900/850), one off, one 56 off. The 56 is always in Group 1. The 58 can be in Group 2 or 1 for power ratio, when controlled by a 58 on camera. You can not get ratio with the built-in flash controller, and you can not use the 58 to control ratio on anything except the A900/850. Maybe the A700 as well, I think. But certainly not any of the lesser models.

The instruction manual for the flash details all the possible combinations and lists the 3600 etc in a table which shows how they can be used.

Hi David,

I had to read your reply a few times! lol Many thanks for the advice.

I can't see the 3600HS listed in the table, only the HVL-F36AM (is the the 3600 re-branded as Sony?).

I followed the guidance for using the built in flash as the controller, and wow it works!

Many thanks for your help again.

Regards,
Cenwyn.

Yes, the Sony 36 and the 3600HS are the same unit.

Hi,
I read the post and I have the same configuration on an alpha 900. However it does not work. The 58 Am as the controller does not fire the 3600 as a slave. I followed all the steps in the manual but it just seems not to pick it up.

On my alpha 700 it works without any problems. The pop-up flash fires both the 58 and the 3600, also together.

The 900 has firmware version 1.0. Maybe there is a problem? I seem to run out of options.
Are there any clues left? Many thanks in advance,
Rik.

Only that the 3600 can only be in Group 1 and ratio flash is not possible, so any setting you have on the 58 which might be using other Groups could perhaps be an issue.

Hi David,
I am sorry, it still doesn't work. The only thing left I am afraid, is to return the flash and have it checked by Sony.
Thanks anyway,
Rik

If I'm reading this post right do I take it that using the A700 with either the pop up flash or F58AM as controller they will fire the old 54HS? And if so, the exposure will be correct? IE the 54HS will not just be firing at full power?

No, you cannot use the old Minolta 54HS flash with any of the digital Minolta or Sony SLR's at anything other then full power - that's the reason they are so cheap second hand!

There is a company, German I think, (David wrote about them a year or two back, if my memory is correct) who will sell you a modification chip to make the 5400HS useable on the digital SLRs, but it didn't give full functionality even then.

Edit: This is the company http://www.voitzsch.net/index.php/en/fl ... -converter
