Hello all, I would like to know the possibilities of using the HVL-58 off camera. Do I need an attatchment which can be fixed to my a900 to send a signal to the flash unit whilst not on the camera or can I only use the HVL-58 to trigger other off camera flashes. It would be mainly used for side lit portraits etc. What combination would I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have to say that the HVL-58 on my a900 is superb and in its basic functions is extreemly easy to use. :)

Hello
You need a 20AM in order to trigger wireless the 58AM.
regards

The other option is to use cords.

Sony's own TTL cords are roughly $40 per meter. You'll need at least one FA-CC1AM for the first 1.5 meters, and one or more FA-EC1AM cords to reach beyond that in 1.5 meter increments.

Or, you could use the PC sync on the a900's front and run a PC cord over to your flash (there are excellent DIY options, too), then adapt it to your flash gun again with a Seagull SC-6 hotshoe adapter. The down side is that you're limited to manual control this way. The up side is you learn how to control lighting more thoroughly and get the most out of your fabulously powerful flash. I explored this option more thoroughly in this thread: Subject: Flash Cables

Thanks for the Info guys. I've actually tried the HVL-58 off camera with the a700 using the pop up to trigger it and this is achieving the desired result. I also saw the next post [ wireless ] which also helped.
