Fireworks

Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but here goes anyway.
At this time of year in the UK there are many displays of fireworks to celebrate Guy Fawkes night, or the more PC term of Bonfire night. I have seen some great shots on the forum of fireworks, Sonolta's in particular, and I was wondering if people had any tips for photographing fireworks.
Some thoughts so far:
- Should I use Bulb exposure and close the shutter after the firework has exploded?
- What aperture? I'm thinking quite large (f11-16) as this is landscape?
- Is a tripod a must or do I stand a chance with handheld?
- I'm guessing my beercan would be a good option for shots of explosions in the sky, and then something wider for shots with background in?
