Gustav,

Thank you. You are very right, it is not so easy to capture these Kingfishers. Mine are not so close like yours, they are normally found at rivers and at swamps and I haven't found their "home" like you have beem able to. I have shot these with my A700 and my SIgma 500mm F4.5 lens. I have even used my 1.4x TC for picture 1 and 2. Your pictures surely show some perfection which comes with total dedication to capture these birds. Maybe some people also do not realise that the Malachite Kingfishers are actually small birds, maybe 2 inches high. Please show us some different shots when you can. The images posted on the Dyxum thread are awesome! I see you are from the Netherlands, my family is originally from there also. We speak afrikaans which comes originally from your language.

Gustav,

Absolutely superb images. I really have appreciation for these images, knowing how fast this species is, and your fantastic documentation of them.

Birma wrote: It will be interesting to hear your stories of how you get these great shots in your part of the world compared to Gustav in Holland.
For your information I will share today's experience with you. I got up at 4.30 this morning, left home by 5am and arrived at the place where I was hoping to see a Malachite Kingfisher by 6.30. (the sun was just rising) I sat in a hide until about 8.30 (two hours of waiting). Then suddenly I saw a glimpse of blue in the reeds far in front of me. He was there for about 2 to 3 mins, then he was gone. I managed a few shots but nothing like Gustav. I used a 500mm plus a 1.4x converter making 700mm and at a cropped sensor of the A700, equivalent to 1050mm. That is a 21X magnification. Now look at picture 1. This is at 21 times magnification. Picture 2 is quite a large crop as you can see yourself. You can guess what magnification this would be at! If I had to use a 70-200mm like Gustav, the bird would be a dot on the horizon. :) There is also no way to get any closer to the bird than I was. So after getting home, the entire day produced one or two not so great images.

Picture 1 - 21x Magnification. - 35mm equiv, 1050mm

Picture 2 - ??? magnification. - after processing.

i will tell , how i make this picture`s

i have a beautiful place , in a forest
when i started with this birds , i look for almost two weeks , for this place
every day , when i finisd my work , i go for a view hours , looking.
about one day , i saw them fly ,
than i saw them flying the most of the time to one direction

kingfischers , have a territory , and in this territory , the have a homeplace , that is a place where they stay the most of the time

i found this place
i place my camouflagetent , and a branch
iàm sitting in the tent on a small chair , and my camera on a tripod

then it is waiting , sometime`s a view minuts , the other time a lot of houres

here are a picture of my tent
Image

i have been there about two years, in every season , and you can sea on the backgroud of the picture , what kind of season it is
when it is brown , it is winter , in the spring , you got beautiful colors whit a little bit of sun
in the summer the forest is green , so you get a green background

here tree picture`s you can see it ìs winter

Image

Image

Image

here four picture`s , in spring , other background , and with very nice light

sometimes . i take somebody with mee , then i take this tent with me , it`s for two persons
