This is exposed (Queenston-)shale. the theory is farmers and ranchers cleared the land 100 years ago and erosion took the top soil and exposed the shale which was from an acient sea bed. theres lots of examples of this clay along the niagara escarpment and they use it to make brick. Old city call (the clock tower building) was made from the materials taken from this area. But they also used limestone also from this area.

I got a moonshot tonight from a less than full moon and I think that condition yeilds more detail. maybe because it isn't so bright, seemed to me it could take more sharpening too.

And a dragonfly from earlier

The links don't open to the photos for me. Could you please check the links again?

Thanks

Sorry Javelin,

I tried everything but I can't see them. There's a chance that this has something to do with my IP adress.

Maybe some other forum member can comment on the links and photos and I can find out the reason for this situation...

Thanks for your efforts,
Yildiz

Great variety of shots, good weekend by the looks of it! From almost 1:1 to the Moon, from deep country to the heart of the city - can you manage to get underwater on the GBR, underground in an opal mine, lost in the outback and few other possibilities to round it off? :-)

Lovely shots Javelin - the shale shots have an Australian look to them, with lovely autumn colours. The moon shot is great - I think having the moon less than full lends an air of enigma - good point about it being less bright.

Love that moon shot Javelin, top work!
Hmmm, the shale does look a lot like Oz sandstone, but perhaps not quite deco enough...maybe, nice pic's though, and a nice sharp dragonfly as well.
Greg

ps. Behave DK, that would be a bit of a weekend jaunt alright :) A quick flit over to the Kimberleys, Bungle Bungles or the Olgas and back, a round trip of 5,000 or 3,000Km (approx, maybe more) depending on which one....from where I am at least.

Seeing that shale I just thought Aus straight away and didn't bother to THINK much further... for some reason, the whole set of shots looked very AUS and not US!

Have to substitute underground Seattle architecture, underwater alligator wrestling in the Everglades, and parascending from Pike's Peak for a decent weekend shot in the USA.
