it was my first time to shoot the redbull air race here in perth last year and it was awesome.....our first position that morning was at the last pylon in the course and this wild card competitor was trying to qualify for the finals...................but he didn't make it

Nice photo. I don't speak 'Strine too well. What's a nip cut? Did he clip the (picture left) pylon? Is the smoke a purposeful aerial display, or is that his engine oil going through a bad head gasket, or piston problem, or....?

Re: nip cut
Great action shot aa los banos. I've seen a bit of that pylon racing on TV occasionally, apparently they are constucted out of very light material and blown up with air, the idea being that the planes can foul the pylon (you are supposed to miss them), and not damage the plane or cause it to crash....it seems to work ok in practise. The smoke trail I'm sure is done on purpose John, not an engine failure.

@john, greg is spot-on in his description....i just called it 'nip cut' because the pylon was hit by a speeding airplane

Re: nip cut
Perhaps its just that the pilot is a barber.. 'Just a little off the top' !! Great shot with perfect timing.
If the last thing you remember hearing is somebody yelling 'CLEAR!!!', assume you've had a problem!!
