Re: Birds 2013
Hi sury, great BIF shots!
The first one is probably a Herring Gull.
The second bird is an American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana).

Re: Birds 2013
Thank you Greg and Mark.
Mark, the herring gull looks almost identical to Lesser Black gull you posted. Are they different
sub species or the names are region specific? Just curious.

Nice shots Sury - I especially like that gull. (I get very confused with the big white and black/grey jobs. Mark will help you out I'm sure.)
Nex 5, Nex 6 (IR), A7M2, A99 and a bunch of lenses.
Re: Birds 2013
The most difficult birds for me to identify are actually gulls, so I'm not a good source for those I'm affraid
However, I did some more searching and think the gull Sury captured could be the American Herring Gull (Larus smithsonianus) or Greater Black-backed gull (Larus marinus). The reason it isn't a Lesser Black-backed Gull is because those have yellow legs, yours has pinkish ones as far as I can see.
I have to admit, the differences are subtle. That's why I have a hard time with gulls.

Some top notch images here! The galahs image reminds me of a beautiful Japanese painting.

Re: Birds 2013
Nice details Pat. I love the creamy background in all the images.
It is nice to have wild life in your backyard. Closest I came to WLIYB is that
duck couple (now I can tell a drake from a duck ), decided to drop in and
use my pool as a rest stop.
With best regards,
Sury

Re: Birds 2013
Mark,
It is not anything major and modest by any standard. I was playing with shutter and it was at 1/4000 when I took the shot. So it was severely underexposed.
Here is the backyard for the reference.
