It wasn't really fog - more like spray from the waves. The long exposure seems to have emphsized it. The sky was a bit greyish but had some blue in it. I decided not to pull down the blue (in B&W), prefering the hazy look.
Here I was getting exposures of up to 15 sec at ISO 50. (This is where the A77's EVF & live histogram comes into its own by the way. You can see what the camera will do; and its natural tendency seems to be to underexpose, so I generally end up dialing in + 1.5 stops.)
Why B&W? Well the thing that originally attracted me to this particular composition was the branch in the foreground. When I examined the images on the computer the branch wasn't as prominent as I recalled. When I lightened it, because it was pretty hot to start with, the colours rapidly blew out and it started to look unreal. The monchrome approach solves that problem.
