I wonder though, do any of you own a Tamron 90mm, f/2.8 macro lens and were you able to shoot similar images with it, or does it have some issues with creatures like a flying bees or maybe butterflies?

I am sure a Tamron 90mm macro lens would do a similar job. I don't have one in Sony/Minolta AF mount but many years ago I used one on my Contax/Yashica cameras and found it to be a superb lens.

Thank you Roger,

Your experience put my mind at rest a little. I'll try to set a day aside for botanical experience to see for myself too.

The Tamron 90mm macro has been superb in every version going right back two, maybe three decades. Like all macro AF lenses, you can not expect AF to work with insects in flight - most expert users switch the lens to manual and follow focus by moving the camera. I have published many macro pictures including magazine covers from the Tamron 90mm. It was a bit of a sore point for Minolta. More people used the Tamron than the 100mm M-AF, and we were not allowed to mention non-Minolta lenses in the magazine, by name. But when we showed a stunning macro shot, and said it was taken with a 90mm macro, there was no need to mention the name - everyone knew that this was the Tamron.

Hi,

Thanks for the links Sonolta, I had seen them when I first decided to buy a Tamron lens. At the time I was weighing my options between the Sony 100mm and the Tamron 90mm. I had ordered them both on the same day but the Tamron dealer acted faster and the lens was sent to my adress almost the second day so I cancelled my other option of Sony and decided to stay with my Tamron while still in the learning curve of Alpha DSLR's. I have no regrets and it does a beautiful job with still objects and flowers.

and,
Thank you for the support David. I use manual focus more than AF myself, just haven't done it on moving creatures. I've tried shooting the flowers in the balcony that sway in the breeze to see if I could get some to be properly in focus and can say that I'm improving.. :)

As far as I'm concerned, it's a diligent, very function-prone and sharp lens that delivers nice colours and textures...

Thanks again everyone,
Yildiz

All of the above are outstanding. A pleasure to view.
