Overall have to say little to complain about with the Minolta, it can at times have CA issues (not really seen this in portrait shots much), it can be susceptible to flare reducing contrast (even with the hood). Can't really argue with the rendering though it's a wonderful bang per buck lens.

Have to admit I've grown fond of the beercan and it's found a place on the tamrac bag now via the lens case on the outside.

Thanks for the comments. I was trying to get out of the "use my normal zoom lens" for portrait shots. I've tended to not use longer focal lengths for a while. This marks a departure from that and I think I'll stick to that strategy.

If anyone has more beercan shots then fire away, would like to see your shots and how you find the lens.

Very nice, Barry. Love the cheerful smile of the subject and great background.

Hi Barry,

Nice shots. Is it your portrait style to photograph the subject actually looking away from the camera, though I understand you use a zoom lens which enables catching the subject unawares and candidly?

Thanks for sharing,

Yildiz

Mostly candid shots, though I do posed one too I much prefer the natural look.
Either can work, looking at the camera or not

I don't always use the 70-210mm f4, the Tamron 90mm f2.8 works very well for portraits too. With either lens you won't have any problems throwing the background out of focus even on a crop camera. The 50mm lenses, I have used those too for portraits. The advantage of using a somewhat longer lens other than compression, is it puts some more distance between you and the subject, and if you fill flash outside being a bit further away makes the effects of flash less obvious

I don't really have any strong feelings on zoom v prime, some do but I think it's really a case of right tool for the job and either will do a good job. For moving around subjects (kids at play) a zoom gives you more flexibility.

Thanks for the explanation for the choice of lens/es. : )

I think I can see the almost micro dot of light from the fill flash on the pupils' of your subject. The background looks very smooth and undistracting also.

Thanks for sharing,

Yildiz
