Some traditions keep on going, albeit to please the tourists and allow the locals some income.
These toboggan sledge rides are traditionally handcrafted with wicker. They still make the wicker seat by hand, don't know about the rest. These are wicker sledges which you can ride downhill from Monte (Madeira). They can almost reach 50 kph!
In case you are wondering: yes, this is a normal motorway and these guys just navigate through traffic without fear.

That's probably because when you get in, you don't know there is other traffic on the road ahead
