A few samples.
In Japan quite a lot of shots were big crops, often as much as 6000px down to 2500px due to subject distance. Luckily the A99 and 70-400G gave great sharpness and detail PROVIDED I managed to keep the camera steady. Adjusting in LR to medium contrast and making sure I used the full white to black range helped. The first shot was quite hazy, could have done with "dehaze" a few months ago!

approx. 4200px wide 1/1250, f7.1, ISO250, 330mm


approx. 2700px wide 1/500, f7.1, ISO200, 400mm


approx. 2800px wide (A77 plus 70-400G) 1/400s, f9, ISO100, 400mm (600mm) and still a big crop. Needed 1/400 to reduce shake, I'd normally use 1/125-1/200 to give more rotor blur at shorter focal lengths. many adjacent frames were scrapped due to blur. Probably got 1 out of 10 pin sharp.


At times I wonder if the new Sigma or Tamron 150-600 would be any use but I'm sure I'd suffer from increased shake at 600mm on both A99 and A77.

Everyone is welcome to look and comment.
Dr Harout had some specific questions about aviation photography on another forum which I rarely use so I posted some examples with data on here for him to view as it is much easier for me and they are shot with Sony equipment

Thanks Mike, I will follow your advices, definitely, but... seldom we see aircraft, let alone aircraft exhibitions or shows...

As I am an optimistic person, I say we have blue skies with no streaks or lines of aircraft passing by...

I am with JB. I can feel the heat from those afterburners in #2.
So would you or Doc care to share the specific questions? I am curious
and since I do have access to these types of planes at the shows, perhpas
I could benefit from the information.

He was asking about suitable settings for shooting flying aircraft. I was giving some examples with settings and also showing how big some crops need to be even with 400mm on a crop body. The A99 with 70-400G has a lot of scope for cropping provided it is in focus and also free of shake.

Interesting shot Ken. I am not sensing the motion though lighting is very nice. May be a bit of brightening the foreground
would convey the motion better.

Talk about limited light! Excellent catch. Mine would be covered in motion blur!
