Yeah, definitely there is a whole lot more to Japan than that. In fact, I never even had only that image of Japan in my head. I remember talking with a young guy from Greece in 2004. It was his first time to visit Japan and his image was mostly about manga and anime.Birma wrote:Great story and picture, Henry. When thinking of Japan from afar it is easy to think of it being all neon tower blocks and bullet trains, but this is a great reminder of the rural side to Japan and the people who work there.

I think it is a cultural thing among many old people in Japan about smiling for a photo. Of course, some do and it is more common now, but over the years I have often noticed that bright, cheerful, laughing older people will suddenly turn grave and wipe the smile off their face when you take a photo. For example, this man was the owner of an old ryokan in Kyoto. I stayed there on my first trip to Japan in 1985. Incidentally, that first trip to Japan was the first 2 weeks of October 1985 so exactly 30 years ago! Anyway, I stayed there for 2 or 3 nights and he always had a big smile on his face and was very cheerful. After I checked out he followed me out the door and just as I was leaving I asked if I could take his photo. I wanted to remember him. This is how he posed. The whole time I was there he never looked like this, but he wiped his personality totally off his face for the photo.bakubo wrote:Unfortunately, like sometimes happens in Japan, when you take a photo of an old person they suddenly get so serious.

Very nice Henry though whatever on that poster threw me off a bit (looks like a pita bread).

I like the look of those Henry - there is a deep, brooding feel to them.
