This winter, we haven't had much snow in the Lou (St. Louis ) but we have had weeks-long periods of below freezing temperatures, so we've got lots of ice. Here are just a few shots. Please feel free to post your own photos of ice.

Hi Sig;
These circular ice accumulations or ice crystals are indeed a very interesting phenomenon. Never saw something similar in real life myself. Nicely observed. Looks very, very chilly...
Thanks for sharing,
Yildiz

Re: Ice (open thread)
When I went to the river, I expected to see chunks of ice as in Valery's photo. I was surprised to see the ice circles. It was very cold, and the only people I saw outside were other photographers. All of the "normal" people were at home trying to stay warm.aster wrote: These circular ice accumulations or ice crystals are indeed a very interesting phenomenon. Valery,
I like all of the drama in your shot. The sharp chunks of ice, the solidness of the train trestle, and a very ominous looking sky.

Another set from the Chain of Rocks.

The ice sits quietly behind the "rapids" at the low-water dam. I'm not an engineer, but I'm guessing that the pressure of the river current rising up and over the low-water dam keeps the larger pieces of the ice-flow pushed back.

Hi ValeryD,
That is everything a frozen winter may look like indeed. Nice processing as well.
Hi Sig,
Every photo in the last two shots are beautiful. You had some spectacular phenomena and architectural elements that contribute to the impact of the frames.
Thanks for sharing both,
Yildiz

Sunset over the sea? I thought those were missile launches while overflying N. Korea!
