Greetings

Unread post by DrScottNicol »

Just a quick 'hello' to introduce myself - I'm new to the forum, to Sony cameras and Photography in general.

In many ways, I'm Sony UK Marketing Division's dream customer - the epitome of their target consumer in terms of the p&s to NEX to SLT upgrade path, compressed into a few short months.

Back in November 2010 I walked into a non-specialist electronics chain and was mooching around the point and shoot camera section. I was accosted by a Sony specialist rep who extolled the virtues / special offers surrounding their new 'mirrorless' camera system and ended up walking out of the shop with a NEX 3 kit, wondering how I'd let myself be talked into a 'ridiculously expensive' point and shoot camera. Then I started to take a few photos.. quite liked the image quality I was getting compared to my iphone.. started reading a few forums / websites... bought a pancake lens... discovered ebay and cheap lens adaptors / old second hand pentax lenses... then got the official a-mount adaptor and discovered the easy choice a-mount primes and suddenly decided the NEX needed an a55 to sit next beside it in what used to be my spare room but now would be better described as my large camera equipment cupboard  .

What surprises me the most is that it took me this long to discover modern digital photography - I'm a self confessed gadget lover and early adopter of new technologies but the last time I really looked into 'serious' digital cameras back in the early 2000s, the technology seemed half baked, low image quality and over priced compared to 'proper' cameras. The massive improvements in the tech that have occurred over the last few years soft of passed me by so discovering that modern dslrs are actually relatively affordable, small, powerful handheld PCs with a lens stuck on the front was a bit of a revelation and one that appealed to my inner creative geek. Being able to then connect them all up to my other assorted electronic devices, PCs, phones and tablets etc is just the icing on the cake :-).

In terms of subjects, I'm experimenting with a bit of everything at the moment from MACRO to Portraits to 'special fx' shots but I've found I have a particular fondness for street / urban photography - even the most mundane of city scenes seems more interesting with a candid shot of a passer by or from looking at things from a different angle. I have found that my idea of a nice photo doesn't always match those of my friends or family - whilst they love the various 'baby portraits' and pictures of the family dog, they are less keen on my shots of dead crabs on a beach, abandoned sofas in the street or pictures of ceiling light fittings taken with lenses deliberately designed to make things look blurry.. ah well, such is the burden we artists have to bear  .

See you all in the discussion forums

Welcome to the forum, Scott! I am glad to have someone else here who is also interested in "street / urban photography" because that is sort of what I like a lot too. I saw some of your photos and they are very good! Yeah, lots of people aren't much interested in mine either. :) I shoot other stuff too and like you, since the early 1970s when I first got into photography, I take lots of other stuff too that a lot of people just look at and roll their eyes. :) I have some of my photos here:

We always have photo threads going so feel free to post to them -- check in the Give it Your Best Shot forum. Also, feel free to start your own. Whenever I start one I usually remember to make it clear that everyone is welcome to post to it also.

Scott, don't listen to Henry, he's lying. Everybody loves his shots, but don't tell him, he is already spoiled...
