Nasa has released images captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter showing what the moon would look like if it rotated in Earth orbit. Fascinating!

The 'far' side is a lot different than the near side. Far more smaller craters.

There is a tentative theory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTVps-M46tI about why the moon has a smooth-ish looking side (our side) and the rough other side, NASA is going to map the gravity highs and lows on the moon to try to find out what lurks beneath.

Ps the moon does actually rotate even though it always points the same ‘face’ in our direction, the rotation speed matches the orbital speed around the earth so in the time it takes to do a lap around the earth it also does one rotation, with a bit of side to side rocking and up and down nodding thrown in.
