Wanted Alpha 900

Unread postby David Kilpatrick » Sat Mar 30, 2013 2:37 am

I would like to buy a exc to exc++ Alpha 900, ideally with grid screen, much like the one I sold last year when buying a Nikon D600 and Alpha 99. I could be interested in an 850 - definitely a second choice, A900 preferred.

I might consider a part-ex for A99, but Sony has not updated the A77 firmware for manual mic volume control, which leaves the A99 as my only option (unles Nikon make the D600 usable - it's awat for sensor dust/grease/oil spot problem, they may replace the shutter, but I am already seeing people report that it makes no difference).

At some point this spring I'll be going to the Woodbury Commons ()http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=7) where Sony has an outlet, and probably a refurbished A900 or A850 for sale. I'll keep you posted.

David,

It's a big circle (A900, RX100), next you'll be wanting an A100.
If you ever want to offload the A99 let me know.

Some Sony stuff and now some Nikon stuff (shock horror). Sony cannot supply what I want so rightly or wrongly I'm branching out to someone who does.

Don't forget the NEX-5N Mike - sold to buy NEX-7, NEX-7 then sold to re-buy 5N.

All down to the problem of needing to use new equipment to keep up with developments, but also requiring certain results and performance in specific situations. The RX100 may actually be more useful than the NEX. I used both together for shots at Focus on Imaging, and put the raw files in one folder. I would only take the NEX now to be able to use the fisheye/wide adaptors - within the RX100 range, it does what I need.

I understand the situation, have done it twice myself but with lenses. Sold it then a year later bought it again.

I have never taken a liking to NEX, maybe I'm just an old fuddyduddy but they just don't suit my style of shooting. The RX100 on the other hand is a superb compact travel camera.

I looked for an A99 in the USA but none of the local stores had them and I didn't have time to go to downtown Houston where I would have no doubt found one. Save my dosh for another day.

A camera store in a mall up here teased with an A900 box in their exterior display case. When I asked about it, they explained that their best customer spends thousands of dollars there every month and leaves the boxes with them so that his wife won't find them.

Thanks Philip and also Mike who pmd me. I have bought the WEX one, if the rear screen is scratched, well - mine was too, a tiny scratch, and I just fitted a glass GGS and never noticed it again. At £850 inclusive of VAT this is the same, for me, as finding one on eBay or through Ffordes for £708 - that's why I was not inclined to buy those on offer from dealers, s/h, at £1199 or £1299. It simply does not work for VAT registered buyers.

I guess it must seem odd that I should to re-enter ownership of an obsolete camera for which many accessories are listed as no longer available by Sony. My risk. It will be used 90% of the time with SSS off, with studio flash or on a tripod for commercial and fine art work. I don't regret parting with my VG as I never ever used it. Just wish it was possible to find a Type L screen.

There is one A900 type L prism screen listed here but I don’t know if it’s actually in stock for sure http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod4869.htm

Yeah bummer they don’t do international orders it seems, strange, the other big dealers do from what I’ve seen on their sites.
Amazon have one listed http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001G0MPAG/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all and Adorama list one http://www.adorama.com/ISOFSLA900.html
but I think they all would be of a similar nature, they list it but don’t actually have it in stock saying they will order it in, but I’m pretty sure that’s not going to work because Sony has discontinued it, I’ve been down that path before with another item. The dual charger, one place indicated was ‘in stock’ and after placing an order it became ‘order in’ which then dragged on for a few weeks and in the end the supplier had to admit was discontinued and unavailable and had to refund my credit card.

Adorama's is not on stock... I can ask Wednesday, when they open the store, if they have any idea when they'll have one

I have left an email with WEX to ask if they have any around. Now, off to the High Atlas mountains. A900 will wait until I get back.
