When installing the upgrade to CS4 from the earlier CS vesions ,is it nececcary to leave the origional version on your hard drive-or can you take it off once you have registered the upgraded version?

As David said, you can safely delete the previous versions. You can even delete them prior to the installation of the current version---but if you do that, make sure you have the previous version's serial number handy because an upgrade copy will ask for it if the previous version is not present anymore on the hard disk. If it is then the current copy will look up the previous copy's serial number automatically.

Note that the serial number displayed in Photoshop's splash screen or 'About' box is incomplete! It misses the last four figures.

Whenever you delete a Photoshop CS copy (i. e. CS, CS2, CS3, or CS4; version numbers 8.0 - 11.0) then DO NOT FORGET to de-activate that copy prior to uninstall.

That said, it is sometimes useful to keep the previous copy around ...
