minolta 70-210 beercan lens

Could anyone please advise me if this lens is better than my Sony 75-300.

Which 70-210 ? If you are referring to the 70~210/3.5-4.5 then my answer is definitely NO. Sony 75-300 is way better.
But if you're hinting at the 70~210/4 , then I must confess I have no idea. But can insist that this latter is much much better than the 3.5-4.5

The 75-300 is not a bad lens, even it performs quite decently. If in any case you're considering changing it with a better one, then I would suggest to save some money and go for the 70-300 G SSM.

As good as the 70-210/4 is I think the Doc's advice is good. I had the Sigma 70-300 APO for my KM 5-D which I really liked, sold it after reading reports of gear stripping on the A200 I now have. So it's the the 70-300 G SSM for me when I get the spare cash, very good value for the dollar from what I have seen!

My beercan is quite a pleasing lens. It rivals my 50/1.7 for bokeh and sharpness, and keeps its relatively fast aperture through the range. I would have to say the only thing that could replace it's function in my bag would be the 70-200/2.8 which costs nearly 10x as much, or the 70-300G which isn't as fast but has a significantly longer reach at only 4x the price. Honestly, I'd be saving up for the 70-300G right now if I didn't alread have the beercan, and may still yet, but there are higher priorities for my kit than replacing an already great lens. I think the Doctor has steered you right.
