"Chipped" Lenses: What features does the chip confer?

In the forum on lenses people have been discussing a 35 mm focal length lens which the manufacturer (Samyang) has begun to make in the alpha mount. I think this is a manual focus lens. David Kilpatrick expects that it will take another year for Samyang to manufacture this lens with a chip for the alpha mount.
Would the chip provide (manual) focus confirmation? What other features does a chip give the user of the lens?

Thanks,
-Clarke

The chip will tell the camera that a lens is present, on some cameras there is no option for "release without lens" in the menu. Also the chip will convey a Lens ID to the camera so the lens shows up in the exif information and also will provide the focal lengt info to the camera so it can adjust the SSS behaviour.

... plus, it will provide a focus confirmation (that was your first question).
I chipped my Rokinon (Samyang) 85/1.4 and quite pleased with it.
