Sony 18-250

I understand that the Sony version of the Tamron 18-250 has different focus gearing making the focus faster.
Anyone confirm this?

Yes, the consensus is that the Sony version focus about twice as fast as the Tamron - the number of turns for the focus screw is about half as many on the Sony.
And it is a good everyday lens, almost as sharp as the CZ16-80.

I was hesitant to purchase an "all purpose lens" preferring generally to carry primes or, at least, the 28-70 G and 80-200 G. However, I recently bought the 18-250 to travel light and I've been pleasantly surprised by the results. The results are quite good (shooting on the A700) and it covers a lot of ground. Definitely worth considering. The Tamron is also a quality lens, but the two are fairly close in price and the Sony does have a tighter/quicker focus turn. Nice looking lens too, and well built.
