My favourite vacation-lazy lens

Unread post by agorabasta »

Samyang 14mm f/2.8, fully manual, but most of the time no focusing even needed; battery lasts much longer as SSS, AF and aperture control are all off.

All samples shot with a55. Developed in Lr3.41, geometry left uncorrected.

Two more views and an all-important sun in the frame corner.

Hi,

Nice pictures!

I also like this lens. You can actually get sharper results if you do focus it properly :-)

Here's an example from mine, shot with an a580. As you see, it's also a sun in frame shot.

Outside of vacation time, I must confess - I still do focus the thing :)

But on vacation - no way! I just dial-in 2-3m distance and F/8-11 aperture. The laziest setting is 2m and f/11. And so I also kill that over-lax LPF of the a55.

And then again, it hardly ever gets much sharper. Check the 100% crops -

these are great pictures - so impressed I've just ordered the 14mm for my a900. Hope it arrives okay, should have asked this forum where to order in the uk. found a site called digitaltoyshop, after a long google search - looks like the lens will dispatch from Spain. fingers crossed

Thanks for sharing them.

Hi Adam

As far as I know this lens is APS-C spec'd, and while I know there is APS-C capability on the a900, there may be better options availale for you?

Hi Agorabasta,

Very good examples of what can be achieved with this lens!

I like the same maker's 8mm version too, and especially what camperbc (Glen of Fogo Island) on DPR can get out of that lens - He has become sort of an 8mm crusader over there.

Regards Steve :)

Samyang 14/2.8 is not APS-C lens, it's FF.

Doc is quite right, the lens is FF.

But it shows a moustache kind of geometry distortion on the FF. So a profile correction is a must for architecture shots.

The APSC crop looks truly beautiful, as the lens has about the right dose of distortion to have the people faces/bodies appear least distorted to the eye.

Yes, I assumed incorrectly that it was only APS-C i.e. the same as the 8mm.....I shouldn't post when it is past my bedtime

Thanks for picking me up on this...

How is this lens with the A900? -- I've been thinking of getting one, but there comments around that it is not a great lens for full frame cameras.

Yuri Afanasev is a very well known photographer and I wasn't aware of his site. Very nice article.
BTW, there was a small article by Armen in Photoworld on the Samyang 14/2.8
