I have always suspect my Hoya CPLs are not good enough....there is always a thick greasy coating on it. I can of course remove it with alcohol swab but the quality always seem to be mysteriously less than desired.David Kilpatrick wrote:Also, the quaity of the Hoya filter is very high. I found that even my Rodenstock UV on my 70-300mm was destroying sharpness at 300mm. I have just been using my Hoya for a week with perfect sharpness. On the last day, I totally forgot it was on the lens. I even shot indoors with it. It takes much less light away from an older type polariser.

Re: Sony 70-300G Auto-Focus with Polarizer
I've received my polariser but hadn't much time to test it on the 70-300 G.

A polarising filter (or any kind of filter) does not turn f/5.6 into f/8 or f/11 but just takes away some of the light—which is two entirely different things. The AF system needs the cone of incoming rays to be a certain minimum diameter. Stopping down beyond f/5.6 will decrease the diameter below the limit. Putting a filter on the lens won't.pakodominguez wrote:But I think you problem is not because the kind of filter, but because the amount of light: at 300 mm, your lens is a f/5.6, and your polarizer takes about two stops of light. Usually camera makers recommend f/8 as minimum for the AF system working properly.
The loss of shapness at long focal lengths is due to the filter glass being poor quality—which is not to be expected in a Sony/Zeiss product but alas! I guess there's an occasional lemon lurking everywhere.

Anyone knows if there is a hood for the 70-300G but with a hatch to use the polarizer?

Seb, I'm looking for a decent looking one. I can do that, but once opened it will stay that way. I prefer with a movable hatch.
