I wouldn't be shocked if it were a tweaked Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 it's entirely possible that's not a bad thing in many ways though.
A good copy of the Tamron should be good at f2/8 in the centre at all focal lengths slight drop off at 50mm but still should be sharp (centre anyway)
The Sigma is good though I can't say it smacks me as "way sharper" at f2/8 because it's weak point is the corners which are poor on the edges wide open up to 35mm. Probably not a problem for most as you'd likely stop down a bit but the tamron is better than the sigma in this respect

It's also half the price which kinda makes it a no brainer for most folks.

And LL's review....

"In any event, purchasers should feel confident that this is a first rate optic worthy of the "G" designation."

He had to change it due to decentering
The one on SLR Gear shows this problem too (adjust the graph to 50mm f2.8 where it is most obvious)
Wonder why they didn't "G" it strange really still not that it matters.

I'd make sure you check the lens when you get it Dr H hope you get a good one!

Hi folks, my love for Sony 16-50 has led me to review my EF mount Tamron mount 17-50 and found it, after years of purchase, very usable on my 30D.

The two lenses are at least closely related.

Hmm...the front group looks extremely similar, but the rear group looks like it's heavily redesigned.

All such lenses are slightly similar - the Sony is more like a Tamron, than it is like a Sigma or a Tokina. And that's all you can really say.
