It's OK to MF. It does not focus quite as close as the Tamron, and it makes significantly less noise when manually focused slowly - but with the focus motor disengaged, there is still a kind of damped action and if you focus fast it makes audible noise. Very slow focus can be done totally silently and very smoothly with this lens (for video).
